'97 Ranger clutch adjustment

I am doing a little work on a friend's '97 4.0 Ranger and I need to try & adjust the clutch.....I'm pretty sure its a hydraulic clutch and have no real experiance with this....right now I have to push the pedal into the carpet HARD to get it to shift smoothly, can anyone help me? (Thanks!)

Have you checked the fluid level in the clutch master cylinder? It is mounted on the drivers side of the firewall in the engine compartment. If the fluid level is low, refill to the notch in the reservoir, using DOT-3 brake fluid.

If the fluid level is low, also check beneath the clutch/bell housing for a possible leak. If it appears that the fluid is leaking, the slave cylinder is leaking and needs to be replaced.

If there is no apparent leakage, then the clutch is worn to the point it needs to be replaced.

Let us know what you find. (By the way, thank you for listing each issue separately.)
