Headlight switch wiring
 

My aftermarket bumper deleted my fog lights and I added some spotlights on the bumper. I just wired the spotlights to the fog light wiring. My switch is now messed up and I just want to wire the spotlights to a seperate switch. Does anybody know what wires control the fog lights on the back of the headlight switch? Will I have to wire in a new hot wire to the new switch or does the headlight switch have separate hots for the headlights and foglights?

If you are installing aftermarket fog lights, you should wire them up from start to finish without using your existing wiring. You may run into other problems by using the existing wiring. For one thing, the fuse for your factory fog lights might not be big enough for aftermarket fog lights. I have heard of people wiring aftermarket fog lights to the factory fog light wiring, and have problems. I would start from scratch, and wire them from start to finish. Good luck.

I've had them on for about a year and haven't had a problem yet. I understand your concerns but it hasnt been an issue yet.

What caused the switch to go bad? Switches are designed to handle certain amounts of power, so some switches can handle more power then others. If you are pulling too much power through the switch, it might work for a while, but then it's going to stop working.

I hate to admit it but what happened to it is kind of humorous. The switch broke off of where it's mounted. In other words it could still turn the headlights on but if I pulled it out to turn the spotlights on it would just pull off. I put some gorilla glue on it to try to get it to work again and I guess I put too much on it. Now I can still turn the headlights on but the switch won't pull out at all. I know, stupid mistake. But this is the reason for wanting to wire to a seperate switch.

why not get a new switch?

Because the cheapest ones I could find on eBay were like 100 bucks. I already have other switches so it would be better to just wire it to a new one I think.

A visit to a parts yard might fix you up.

not sure what year you have, but I'd be surprised if there is a $70 difference between any of the years

This is the switch I have. My point is, whether its 30 bucks or 100, I already have other switches I can use and take 10 minutes of work so why not just wire up a new one and not have to buy a new ford headlamp switch.

On my '08, the headlight switch fog light wire was gray/violet.

Did you do any mods to your wiring? On my 2003 F350 I did the mod to have the fogs on with the high beams. I liked that, and am trying to figure out if that can be done on the 08 trucks. Or, should I just power the fogs with an upfitter switch?

it depends on how much you want to cut up the wiring. A replacement OE switch insures that you won't create electrical gremlins. Splicing a switch in as a fix opens up issues like back-feeding and shorting.

I've always been an advocate of repairing the problem instead of fixing it.


also, do you have an 01, or an 02-04? They are different... I wouldn't trust that link you provided.

99-01: the original Super Duty design... Not sure why, but that is one expensive switch that doesn't make a distinction between w/fog and w/o fog.
