What do you tow with your 6.2L?

Well we tow a 10k 5ver with our 6.2L and does just great. I talked to a nice gentlemen today that tows a 15k lb 5ver that stepped out of a f450 diesel and stepped into a f350 6.2L 4.30 gears 8D and said he was honestly impressed with the gas motor and how it handled the weight. He said at 60-66 mph towing the rig that it would avg 7-8 mpg and on some hills he would use the manual mode to keep it from shifting from 5,6 6,5 ect.. but over all at this weight he was satisfied with the truck... Pretty interesting call since he was at maximum Ford rated weight.
Oh and i think he said he towed from TN to AZ and was heading back in a couple of months... So what are the rest of you guys towing?

Not sure what is wrong.. Problems making this post...This is the "base load" behind the 2001.. Usually I've got a couple of attachments so I can get this load over the recommended weight by fords standards--- if I want...

Currently an '08 Outback 23KRS weighing approx. 7500 lbs. loaded. Hopefully this spring we'll be trading up and going to a 30 footer.

I pulled the camper about 20 miles to dump my tanks before winter but haven't taken it out for "real" yet. I will say that the 6.2 pulls noticeably better than the 5.4 I had in my F150.

itherrkr 02-02-2011 09:49 AM

This is all great news for me, as I wait for my truck to be built. I will be pulling a 25 foot, 11.5 foot high toy hauler, with a gross trailer weight around 10,000# when loaded. My poor 6.0 diesel only gets 9 to 9.5 mph pulling this thing, so I am hoping for 8 with the 6.2. 3 weeks till delivery so says Ford. Can't wait!

5 Star Tuning 02-02-2011 12:31 PM

I like that trailer of yours Byram.

Byram 02-02-2011 12:33 PM

Thanks Mike - It's pretty well set up - Kind of wish that I had got 8K axles under it though...

Josh.fishing 02-15-2011 09:38 PM

Pulled with my 6.2 this weekend. 4.30 gears 4x4. I have a center console cat with t top 2 honda 4 strokes and 170 gallons of gas. 65 mph yielded 7.5 by hand and 7.6 on the gauge. Dodge cummins got 8.5 with same load and speed.

30 ft 5th wheel

I have a 30 ft 5th wheel with 2 slides. Fully loaded it weighs about 9,000 lbs but can go higher if my wife takes all her stuff. :-D

It is a 2011 Forest River Signature Ultr-Lite model 8285WS

towing

Just returned to Michigan from trip to Florida and back with 2011 F350 super cab 4X4 6.2 with 3.73 gears. Load was a slide in truck camper with 14 foot enclosed cargo trailer. Load weight was 7000lbs+- a little. Traded a F 350 with V10 and 373 gears and this new truck pulls as well or better than old one. New transmission is very good and allows better gear selection. Much of trip was with 6th gear locked out and mpg for 4700 miles was 9.5. About same or little better than V10. Truck was much more pleasant to drive though since it did not shift too often which for some reason tends to bug me. Easily accelerated on any hill if you are willing to run some of the time in 4th gear. So far very pleased with this combination for pulling.

Welcome to FTE! Thanks for posting. Sounds like you've got a pretty darn good replacement for your V10.

Have you actually weighed this? The 23KRS weighs about 5100 pounds empty. I know we don't have 1500 pounds of stuff in our 36' fiver ready to camp for a week. Just curious.

Thanks for the report. It is always great to real a real long trip data.
Just to clarify you stayed in 5th gear most of the 4,700 miles?
Did the truck stay in 6th on the flat highway at all or just kept downshifting to 5th?

porsche 02-17-2011 10:59 AM

It would do fine on flat roads or minor hills but with a double dose of wind from camper and enclosed trailer any head wind with hills would cause shifting so I chose to run in fifth gear at about 2300 rpm and milage was same as when pulling harder in sixth so that seemed best. without wind issues or if I chose to slow down it would pull in sixth gear much better. I drive about 68 to 70 mph. In fifth gear final drive ratio is still a fairly tall 3.15 to 1.

Thanks great information about staying in 5th. I will see what happens with my 5th wheel (8,500lbs). I still have to wait for the truck and break it in before towing (1,000 miles). That's what the book says.

Here is some information about the transmissions normal temporature which I found in the owners manual. Some have seen the trans. temps at 180-190 degrees F. Fords says that with the transmission warm it should range from 180 -200 degrees F. Just thought you'd want to know.

Have yet to pick up truck - next week. Sold my 2000 F350 with 7.3. Love it but it's just getting worn out at 175,000. Not the motor just everything else.

So back to the thread.

1. 30' Max lite trave trailer - 7500 fully loaded.
2. 20' enclosed car hauler - rated at 10k but I usually never get it that loaded.

Interested to see fuel mileage towing the "hills" here.

Sargemo105 03-20-2011 07:51 PM

I reluctantly traded in my beloved Ford Expedition because of the travel trailer I bought, which is a 36' Jayco G2 Bunk House Double Slide. The tongue weight is 1,100 pounds, and the GVW is 9,950 lbs. This far exceeded the tow capacity of the Expedition.

In it's place, a 2011 F350 SD CC 6.2 with 3.73 axle (most of my camping is within 200 miles of home). My truck just came in this past Thursday. I was able to take it for a spin and snap a few photo's. It's back at the dealer for prep work and after-market add on's. Can't wait to start breaking it in to get ready for the camping season. :-X06

kmonty2 03-20-2011 08:16 PM

I have a Keystone Outback 10th anniversary 312BH on order. 7800 lbs. dry, guessing about 9500 when loading with all the camping gear:-partybud, and maybe even 10,000. But who care I got Ford that can pull that easily, and that's what I bought it for.

Josh.fishing 03-20-2011 09:19 PM

These are a pic of my truck and boat. Just got through catching all those red snapper that we can't beat off of out hook. F### the NMMA for those crazy limits on them. We caught at least 50 red snapper 15lbs+. Can't keep them. It's not louisianas problem that our oil rigs hold all the fish and Florida has no fish left. Oh well we did have the oil spill and I will gladly report that the fish seem to be healthy and growing. We tagged about 20 red snapper for the wildlife and fisheries. The juvenile fish that hatched last year seem to be healthy also.

Back to topic some bridges are closed so we had to go back roads to the gulf that ended up bringing total trip to 370 miles round trip. Never ran over 55 mph and got 8.8 mpg. That's a lot better than 7.5 that I got last trip. I have 2800 miles on the truck now so the mpg's seem to be a little better.

Timberghost 03-21-2011 09:15 PM

I've been waiting to be able to post here! Just picked up my truck on Saturday. F350 Lariat, Black w/ chrome package, 3.73 4x4. My main reason for the truck is to pull our camper. It's a 2010 Passport 2590BH. Total weight is close to 6,000.

I was pulling this camper with my 2004 FX4 and it did fine but just did not feel strong to me. Subconciously I believe that I was looking for a reason to upgrade to a bigger truck. I will say however, that my wife told me over the winter that when we get a new truck we had better plan for a bigger camper to pull with it. If Momma's gonna encourage this behavior, who am I to disobey! :-X19

Anyway, I am really excited to see how the new rig pulls the camper. The 6.2 feels pretty strong but there will always be doubt until I get my 1000 miles in. Once there, gonna go get the camper and I'll post my thoughs afterward.

11limited6.2 03-21-2011 09:59 PM

Well I have a f150 with the 6.2 all the bells and whistles. I have a 31.5ft tang velagio (witch is a special model up here in Canada maid for extrem winter camping). The dry weight is 6800 toung weight is 980 and gross cargo is 10000lbs. I just can't wait to see how this motor pulls

Sargemo105 03-21-2011 10:22 PM

Timberghost: remember, we're free to do as we're told :)

Beech19 03-23-2011 09:57 AM

Will be towing a Rockwood 8280SS, 31.5' about 6,700 lbs dry with a 17' Lund pro sport behind it. Will be way over length with the new truck but haven't had any problems in the past

FX4 with Continental tires?

HillHunter 03-28-2011 10:51 AM

Yeah same thing I asked the dealer.

HillHunter 03-28-2011 10:52 AM

I think they changed them out with another truck.

HillHunter 03-28-2011 11:11 AM

Razr,

check out this link it shows a few Fx4's with these same tires.

Haven't towed it yet, but I'm picking up a 2011 Jayco Eagle Super lite 30.5DBSA fifth wheel on Monday. 9120 lbs dry with a pin weight of 1750. I think my truck will pull it just fine. Its a 2011 Lariat FX4 Crew Cab 3.73.

rodupr 04-05-2011 08:39 AM

Let me know how that works out for you. I am looking at some fifth wheels in the same weight range. I also have the 2011 6.2 Crew Cab with 3.73's.

I have a 2011 Forest River Signature Ultra Lite, 30 ft , Model 8285WS, 2 slide and dry weight of 7,033 lbs and a dry tongue weight of about 1,108 lbs.
This is not a full timers 5th wheel but still has many bells and whistles.
The 6.2L pulls it with no problem.

Pulls good and stops good. Sags too much in the rear. The stock bump stop is about 2 inches from the axle with the trailer hooked up. I doesn't bottom out though on big bumps. Pin weight is about 1800#. I'm thinking about airbags or Timbren helper things that go inplace of the bump stop. Thoughts?

Timberghost 04-05-2011 06:40 PM

Boomsling,

They look real good together, congrats on your new toys!

Seeing all of these pictures of you guy's "hooked up", I can't wait to get my camper out of the barn and drag it around a little!

rodupr 04-05-2011 07:07 PM

It looks good. It is sagging a bit in the rear. How stable does it feel? How far have you pulled it so far? From my calculations that weight is up at the top of the range of what the truck is rated for. I think the GVWR is around 11,700 for that 5'ver if I am not mistaken. I don't currently have a 5'ver, but I pull a TT that weighs about 7000lbs. I was up at the limits of the 2004 F150 I used to have so I got the 2011 F250 and it now pulls great. As you know once you get a better feeling towing you get the fever for a bigger camper. I just don't want to be back up at the upper limits of the truck again.

I would be interested in any feedback you have about how you feel pulling that camper after you have been on a few trips, BTW great choice. I love that floor-plan, and my kids do too.

Thanks,

Rodney

boomsling 04-05-2011 07:37 PM

Rodney,

Yeah, GVW for the camper is 11,700. Sticker says 9410 dry with generator. Mine doesn't have one, so I don't know what the actual weight is. Advertised pin weight is 1750. My truck is rated for 2400 in cargo, so I didn't think it would sag so bad.

I loaded all of the stuff(weighed 600lbs) from our old camper into our new one. That brings my estimated total for the camper to just under 10K. We'll see if that's true when I bring it to the scales. My truck is rated to pull 12k. I hope I'm not too close to the max.

I haven't pulled very far yet, but the truck has plenty of passing power and stopping power. It feels stable too. Not very many mountains, or hills where I live, so I don't know about that. We are going camping this weekend, so I'll tell ya'll how it went.

My kids love the floorplan too. Wife likes the two bathrooms.

Andy

rodupr 04-05-2011 08:11 PM

Thanks for the reply. I look forward to hearing how your trip went. Have fun.

Rodney
