Diesel Smog Check
Had my '06 tested today @ Peng's 76 on Carson & Cherry in Long Beach. I think it took the guy longer to input the info into the computer than it did to do the actual test. Here's what he did:
1) Rev the motor three times while an assistant checked for smoke 2) Crawl underneath and check for the cat (just looked at it, didn't tap on it) 3) Plug hand held scanner into the OBD II port 4) Poke around under the hood for a couple of minutes 15 minutes, 50 bucks lighter and I was out the door with the certificate. |
LOL That's a stupid way for Ca to make $15. Just add it to my registration instead, I'll put the other $35 into the economy myself. I'll be going in for smog next week...

I put it back to stock a few days ago. With the tune installed I'm sure it would fail the smoke test.

Hmm... that's a good idea. I've got a 'smog' tune... but haven't actually ever run it to see if it smokes. (Have 6 mo to make sure everything is in order.) Can their obdII scanner detect the presence of a chip, even if it's running a detuned program? I kept the cat off my stock exhaust just in case - need to make a 'test pipe' adapter for it, although I thought the '99 shouldn't require it. I'll check with one of the cooler local places before then and report in here in case it helps anyone else.
Once I get flanges on the stock cat, maybe with some adapters for the MBRP - happy to loan it if someone's in need. (The only 'relatively affordable' ca legal cats i've heard of are Magnaflow... and I've yet to see a vehicle run right with one of those things in the way of the exhaust. ) I'd really really hate to have to find a 'spare' set of stock injectors to pass smog. I'd rather get an east coast DL, use a relatives address and register the truck somewhere else. |

The place I went to is a test-only facility. I figure they hadn't seen too many diesels there, because he was referring to his book quite a bit. |

Seems to me there would be a black market for new stickers. |
Mornin Guys
Haven't had to smog the '08 yet but it sounds like a switchable system will be easy to work out. My mileage for a diesel is horrible, so I can't wait to delete dpf. Figured I'd get to it after 100k is reached. Any thoughts on who would have a nice system besides the obvious Banks |
I see a lot of people using Spartan and KEM for their DPF deletes and tunes. I believe Elite is in that game also.

Why wait, do ir now and save the money on fuel. A full tank is over $100, you'll be able to make that back in what you save on fuel.
|
True enough.
Just don't feel like taking the chance on a drivetrain warrantee ( read expensive ) and being turned down cause they bust me by detecting the reprogram on the computer. From what I read they are pretty good at that. |
On that subject
Steve just turned me on to Spartan Diesel today. On there site they claim that their program cannot be detected, so a little more detective work is warranted there. |
