How to Wire up GPS (or anything you want to turn off with truck)
 

Ok, I did this Sunday, but took no pictures. Sorry. But this will power your GPS or other 12 volt things that you want to turn off when you switch off the truck.

1. Go to local auto parts store and get a 12 volt power outlet that have the wires on the end so you can splice them in.

2. In the same bundle as the SEIC, you will find a WHITE with BLUE Line wire. That is the RUN IN Hot wire. This wire will be your power wire for your 12 volt power outlet. Splice the red wire from the 12 volt plug to the white and blue wire.

3. Find a bolt under the dash that you can get the negative wire from the 12 volt power outlet under to ground out the circuit.

4. I just electrical taped the outlet to the metal bracket running in the area so it will be secure.

Now that you have that done, you now have in reality a cigarette lighter plug hidden in the dash that will turn on and off with the key switch.


Just a FYI, I was planning to cut the end off my GPS and just hardwire the GPS into the RUN Hot Wire, but found out the Mini-USB only runs on 5 volts. And also the head on the GPS lighter plug holds the antenna for the traffic updates. So don't think cutting the end off will work. IT WON"T.

I did pretty much the same thing, except I used an upfitter switch. I like to be able to almost blindly reach over and turn her off with a quick flip of the upfitter switch! I found this useful on our recent long road trip when we'd take a bit of a side trip to grab some fuel and the GPS would keep interrupting. If we were in tight quarters I could turn her off without any effort at all, and keep my eyes looking out.

Did you have to use a resister? According to the Ford SVE Bulleton, quote "Input Resistor; In ALL modes (SEIC, PTO, BCP), an input resistor is required".

Your info is great, but I'm cautious about messing something up. I do have something to connect, but don't want to use one of my upfitter switches.

no. All that white and blue wire is just like a 12v power wire, except it turns off with the key. Your proably confuisng this with the high idle mod, in which case you will need the resistor.

i was in the same boat with not using the upfitter switch. This has worked for me for 2 weeks with no problem. If you are doing GPS be careful on your voltage. If any doubt I would just wire the cig lighter in and then you can always upgrade the GPS without hardwiring it all over again.

All I wanted was a cig lighter connection under the dash for a radar detector, similar to what my old 99' 7.3 had. My other 12V connectors are for phone, computer, or whatever my wife decides to connect.

Where do I find this bundle of wires?

bundle of wires comes in through the firewall in the driver's footwell up above the carpet line.
the loose wires (maybe 18 if I remember correctly) are blunt cut and taped to the rest of the loom at the firewall.

Does anyone know if there is a similar wire in the engine bay? I want to power some aux marker lights that will come on with the key without having to breach the firewall gromets.

if not you can make one....

use one of the 4 that is blunt cut on each end (under dash in the bundle of blunt cut wires AND under the hood) and already run through the firewall.
Splice the white w/blue tracer wire to one of these wires under the dash. Then splice onto it up under the hood.

Good idea! I took a quick look at it today and it looks like the best way to get at the bundle in the engine bay is from under the truck.....! Way to much "stuff" from the top.
