How do you prime the HPOP ?

Doing a long block build up. Told I need to prime the HPOP. Any ideas on how to do this with conventional tools ? Oil cooler installed or need to leave off ?

Also, is it okay to clean the ICP with carb cleaner and re-use ?

When mine was replaced at the dealer they just cranked it untill she fired up. After looking for leaks and leting her warm up they went on a drive and let her shift through all of the gears at full power.

No idea on the ICP though.

You need to fill the HPOP reservoir before you put the oil cooler on. It will save you a LOT of wear and tear on your starter. I wouldn't clean the ICP with anything. I'd gently clean the screen. If you got a new STC fitting for the HPOP a new screen should come in the kit.

I filled mine then unplugged FICM and cranked it for 30 seconds or so.

Good idea!

In the instructions with the long block they clearly state to prime the HPOP as they don't want the motor spinning over and over. I guess to avoid pre mature wear ?

Just curious if anyone has done this or if it is needed ??

IMO that just means to fill the valley of the engine (and be very clean when doing it).

pretty much what mark said.
the engine wont start till it has high side oil. thats made by the hpop anyway.

Okay thank-you. BTW - How many litres of oil go into the valley ?

I guess I better upgrade the STC fitting as well. Truck is an '05. Been looking for a thread on part # and how to replace. Appreciate if anyone could forward a link.

cheezit 12-12-2010 09:14 AM

.89qts of oil go in to the sump.

sullyt28 12-12-2010 09:56 AM

I believe thats about 2 litres. Thanks Cheezit.

Found a thread thanks to Bismic on the stc.

Actually that's about 8/10 of a litre. 1qt=.967 litre IIRC

The low pressure pump will still be lubricating the motor, it takes the HPOP pumping oil to actually start it.

I say just keep cranking till it starts, in about 15-20 second bursts.
