Spotted Automatic Transmission 1965/1966
I have spotted a 1965 or 1966 F100 with a automatic transmissin in. Will this transmission work in replacing my standard transmission in my F100 1965. Also is this transmission a reliable one. Did these transmission have any ongoing problems.
If it will work and is reliable, I guess I would need to pull the sterring column out also. Was there any problems with the sterring column in 1965 or 1966. Do you'll think this is the very best option or is there something that is simpler, less time consuming. Thanks for all your info and advice, in advance, Kevin Felix |
I have an automatic in my 65, but it didn't come so equiped...
IIRC correctly, you are comparing two different trans in 65 and 66. The 65 came with a COM or Cruise-o-matic, where the 66 came with a C6, but I think that was for the FE motors. The smal blocks would have had a C4. What engine do you have in the truck now? I think a column from most any truck to 79 bolts in. What are you looking for in "simpler and less time consuming"? Do you want an auto or do you want a stick, then you go from there.... |
Sorry Mike 65 & 66 both came with C-O-M autos.
Kevin, The C-O-M is an OK tranny but has been discontinued for a lot longer. You might want to consider if you are thinking power steering/power disc brake up grade to buy a donor 73-76 with a C6 in it. You would need to swap the column for the power gear anyways so you can shoot more rabbits at once that way. John :-X06 |
My 66 does not have a C6. It is a 352 but has, I believe, a c.o.m. tranny from the factory. I will be getting rid of both in the semi-near future though. My opinion is to grab a C6 for a FE block if you can. Much better transmission in my opinion. Much lighter as well.

If you don't want to switch out the steering column, there is always the Lokar automatic shifter that will look very similar to the factory manual shifter.

Just get a fire wrench and cut the column. It keeps the originality using the oem shaft

No C6's in F100/350's until 1968.
1965/67 F100/350's w/352's came with MX Cruise-O-Matic. |
Is their one of your suggestions that all you would agree on. Thanks for all the suggestions, but gees which one is the ______ and the most ____ _____. Please let me know. Kevin Felix

"I would need to pull the sterring column out also" Yes that would be best. "Do you'll think this is the very best option" No a C6 is a better option. Go back and read #3

Jowilker; Thanks, you are the only one that has responed to my last post. How much difference is there between just installing a power brake booster on the original brakes and power disc brakes. I think I would like to keep the original (no power) steering type in my 1965. At this point in my life I believe I need a little bit of exercise, which is not much with the original type steering. Do you think I'm clean of my rocker or what. Thanks Kevin Felix

Kevin what you are talking about is buggering with an existing system, doing the swap you are installing a Ford engineered system.
He if you like pulling on the wheel, just stand on the brakes. The ones in your truck have worked just fine for over 40 years, they will continue to do so. I wanted creature comforts in my truck. John :-X06 |
