front end clunk, only when coming to a stop
 
Hey all,
My 2005 Ex, limited 4x4 psd has developed a clunk noise that I'm curious if someone can help diagnose if been there/done that also...

When I come to a stop I'm getting a single clunk coming from the front end somewhere, plenty loud enough to hear and also feel in the floor of the car, on both sides of the front seat. I thought it was stronger on the drivers side, but recently took a road trip and can say it's about the same sound/feeling on both sides. If you hit the brakes at higher speed it does not happen until you get closer to stopping around 10-20 mpg you get the clunk. It is not every time, but about 50% of my stops...

I'm thinking front sway bar ends, but was under there recntly for an oil change and they looked okay to me. Would there be some wear there that is not visibly noticeable? Any other thoughts if I'm looking in the wrong spot?

I have the same problem. I just got done doing ball joints, sway bar bushings and new sway bar end links. I have heard some talk about greasing the driveshaft yoke but it's only a 10 degree windchill here lately so I won't be under there doing that any time soon. But that might be a place to look before you start throwing parts at it.

I done the same thing, I replaced my shocks and bought the end links and bushings. The end links looked fine. I changed them anyway becaUse I had them. I can't really tell a difference. The sway bar bushings would not fit at all. It maybe because mine is a 2wd and they were not all that bad off.

I seem to of had the same problem but after engaging the the 4 wheel drive several times off & on; now i do not feel the clunk or pop.

what to lube on 4x4, or other?
 
Interesting, after reading this I thought it was worth a try, so engaged the 4x4 HI a couple times today on the way into work, did not seem to change anything. I only did it 2x, so may try more tonight, but what I did notice playing with it this morning, is that I get the clunk when in revers and coming to a stop also. Never noticed that.

What is there to lube on the drive shaft, or other??

I may have to strap myself up under there and have my wife drive back and forth a few times to see what is going on!!!!

There have been a few posts recently about noises - pops/bumps/creaks. I'd look at the following:

Sway bar end links - may look fine but twist and turn them and see if you see excessive play in the movement. The bushings should not be torn, missing or have a lot of dry rot/cracking.

Body mounts - hard to see and diagnose but there is one directly under the drivers feet which has caused a few problems here recently.

Lift the front of the truck off the ground - check for any play in the wheels (side to side movement), possible play in the steering linkages and tie rod end links, shocks (should not be leaking or have worn/missing bushings.

Beyond that - I would look at the brakes - a loose caliper can cause weird sounds or sensations. Brake pads can shift, break and not contact the caliper or the rotor correctly and the pressure of braking can cause movement or noise.

The drive shaft lubrication may not be the issue here but is certainly worth doing if it hasn't been done yet. Here's a link which will help explain it: 2004 F250 Slip Yoke Service

I had the same problem, was a lower balljoint that was loose. Just finished installing all 4 new balljoints, new u-joints, knuckle seals ect....no more noise.

Get under there and pry everything that it could be and look around. It sounds like maybe a loose body mount, sticking driveshaft yoke, or a loose caliper. Check all your u-bolts also.
