Steering Wheel not centered

well, it turned out i needed a steering box. Due to price of fuel, this close to christmas and the fact that it is a 2002 model, i went with a junk yard steering box. Easy to take out and install. Anyone know why my steering wheel is not centered. The junk yard steering box was donated by a 2002 model. The steering shaft only goes on the box one way.

Have the front end aligned and "center the steering wheel." It's a tie rod thing.

No need fo an alignment just for the steering wheel centering, just adjust the drag link until your satisfied :-D

reason for the alignment is an 88 dodge diplomat clipped the corner of my bumper and hit my tire while i had the wheels cut all the way to the left. This caused my steering box to get trashed, turning too far than intended. Great forum, Have read and learned for a long time, just not posted much. lots of thanks to everyone

Jimschevey, I had the same thing happen to me, just about...

You need to look at your outer tie rods and make sure that it is not bowed in the center of the longer right side outer tie rod. if it is not straight across the diff cover, you need tie rods.

You said you got hit with the wheels turned all the way left, was the hit on the drivers side?

Yes then you do need an alignment, or atleast get it checked. But you can compensate for the steering wheel being off centered without an alignment, just for future reference.

yes, Fishin76, pouring down the rain, parking lot where i worked, he was late and in a hurry and hit hard. Didnt see where he even came from. Hit me in the driver side. Totaled his car on the spot. Mine had to be towed due to the steering box, but it is back on the road. Now i need to get me a bumper
