1987 Ford 460 getting no fuel to the carb
 

Hi, I have a 1987 Ford Econoline Motorhome with the 460 carb'd motor. It was running fine all summer went to start it and now it won't start. I dumped some fuel into the carb and it will run for 1-2 seconds until the fuel burns out. When I pump the gas there is no flooded fuel smell. I has been sitting 2 months so something may be clogged somewhere?

Check Fuel filter and fuel pump first.

This is a easy one, your fuel pump has failed.
A tell-tale sign of failure is a oil leak from the fuel pump, not a bad job on the 460.......anyone with modest mech skills can do it easily.

I dont know w the econlines but the f-series has a electric fuel pump un 87 on the carb 460

You bring up a good point, I am NOT 100% sure if its a mechanical fuel pump or electrical. On most of the Class C ford motorhomes I have worked on, the fuel pump is mechanical and mounted in the normal place, however 87 was the last year of the carb, they may have gone electrical on the 1 ton van chassis.

Brad and I will argue this back and forth, but I KNOW how my truck was delivered. ;)

My '87 has a mechanical pump.
A carb with recirculating electric pump is called 'hot fuel handling' and usually incorporated where the truck was delivered to a climate known for vapor lock.

Check to see if there is gasoline in your oil if you suspect that a mechanical pump has failed.

My fried bought a 87 f350 dually and i t had no mechanical pump but a electric one. The relays constantly went bad. That and there vas an overfueling valve right on the carb that returned unneededd fuel to the tank so not to flood the engine. That thing to a crap every other year and would starve the engine when pulling hills w hay wagons

I think it was just a plot by Ford to use up the 8,000,000 two piece pump eccentrics they still had, stashed in a warehouse somewhere.
It may be a sign of which line it rolled off of.

As for your tale of a WFO 460 being underfueled by a low pressure electric pump, well, I just can't believe it...... :p

different ones depending on how the vehicle is equipped.
On a 460 motorhome my guess would be an electric pump, but you'll have to look to find out for sure. As previously stated, the relays are problematic, so that could be an issue.

subford has a great trouble shooting post "no fuel pressure 87 F250 460cid carb non EFI" I found a bad low oil pressure cut (shut) off switch. The post indicates jumping across the wiring plug-in to start trouble shooting. Switch is located back off the engine near the oil gauge sending unit. Easy to get to on the van.
