Fuel economy chip?
I just bought a 1997 F350 with a 5.8 351w. I was talking to a guy that used to have a similar model truck. He said that their is a fuel economy chip that will improve your gas mileage 3-5 mpg. I have never hear of a fuel enonomy chip only horsepower, torque, performance chips. Does anyone know if there is one and who makes them. Thanks for the help.

Thats total BS. Just give it a good tune up with Motorcraft parts and some fresh fluids and filters and a decent flowing exhaust. Thats the best you can do for it.

After that, drive like a little old man in Buick, avoid hard acceleration, and routes that have heavy traffic with long traffic lights, clean the 300lbs of garbage out of the bed, keep the tires properly inflated and drive the speed limit.............not much fun for certain, but the only ways to actually increase mpgs.

Jet performance claims that their chip can be programed for economy.
|
Thank you gentlemen that is what I figured.

I would never get a Jet chip. Its crap. I have known more than a few people over the years that had nothing but issues with them.

Over the counter chips don't do much , but a custom tune will help but can get expensive , anything you can do on the exhaust side , like headers & free flowing exhaust will help , a good tune up , autolite plugs , MSD cap , rotor , wires & coil , and advance your timing a few deg from 10 deg BTDC to 12 - 14 is a good place to start....Lew

I just filled up for the first time since I got the truck and I am doing better than what I thought. I am at 14mpg. I am now guessing that I am at the high end of where my fuel mileage will be at. Am I guessing right?

My '92 F350 4x4 w/5.8L engine and E4OD has never gotten 14 MPG since I owned it. Best I have ever touched was almost 13 MPG running 65 MPH on the interstate. I suppose I could surpass that running 55-60 MPH.
I just got through checking all the sensors with a meter and visual check last night. All checked out with good values at various temperatures. I did find the ACT was contaminated with old oil. I cleaned it with brake cleaner, dried, then retested. I had a test run today, the truck does seem to have a little more oomph. I never had a check engine light or codes in CM, but I thought it was worth a shot to see if anything was on the edge of being out of tolerance. Time will tell if I actually pick up another MPG or two. |

As for the headers, I got a 2 MPG boost installing a set of headmans on my 460. |
The headers will help as well as a free flowing exhaust.
I recommend Motorcraft plugs, but Autolite are just fine. Advancing the timing a little is a good choice too. I have advanced mine from 10 to 12. |
