Thoughts on the 6.7?

So I currently have a 2000 F-350 7.3 PS. Love it, had it since it was new, but had to take a friend to the dealership yesterday for some warranty work and happened to see a really clean 2012 F250 FX4 with the 6.7 PS with only 36,000 on the clock.

Don't really want to go back to making a payment but starting to get the bug, lol. Just wondering what everyone thinks about the 6.7?

Painted Horse 10-27-2015 10:04 AM

The newer trucks have many enhanced features.

In 2005 Ford changed the front suspension, A Long bed turns in the radius as the older short bed. Brakes were enhance in 2005 and again in 2012 or 2013( don't remember).

Of course all the new electronics are neat. Back up Camera is great. USB or Blue Tooth music. I've long forgot about CD's. Hands free Cell phone. and 110 volt invertor and USB ports to charge personal electronics.

Trucks are much quieter. What little hearing I have is preserved.

But the trucks have grown, Heavier and taller. Need the man step on tailgate to get into the bed. Tires are bigger and more expensive. But brakes last much longer than earlier Superduties.

Much better mirrors on mynew truck vs my 2000.

Less space in the engine bay if you like to work in that area.

Much more powerful engine, But mpg will be down a bit from your 7.3L.

I was in your boat, well sort of..... I came from a 2004 F250 4x4 (last year of the leaf front suspension) but with a tuned 6.0L with 4" turbo back exhaust, no cat.

Jumping to a 2015 6.7 - one the biggest things I like is the lack of noise. Don't get me wrong, I love a stinky noisy diesel beast as much as the next guy, but this new truck is so quiet you'd swear it's not diesel... until you hit the go pedal!

This thing is stronger, faster, and all around more powerful than my 6.0L even with a hot street tune in it!

Fuel mileage - my 6.0 got about 9-10 towing my 13K# 5th wheel. So far this 6.7 (not fully broken in yet) gets the same. But has tons more power.

Towing - Tows straighter, more stable, stops better, goes better, rides better. Towing is so much better and more stable that I'm going to get the wife driving it soon to help with long trips. She would have never been able to handle the 2004. You actually had to DRIVE it while towing. Not just cruise.

Unloaded fuel mileage - my 6.0 got 15-16 on the highway. Weekend before last I was heading home from the country place (unloaded). Got fuel before leaving and reset trip meter - drove conservatively home 65-75mph range, a few areas of slow and stop-n-go traffic - travel time was 2:02hrs, 117.6 miles - got 21.5 MPG !

Not bad for a 7500# brick with only 2500 miles on it so far. Hopefully it'll get even better once it loosens up with a little more break-in and synthetic oil.

The interior is also one of my favorite things. I got the Platinum package with the full console and MyFord touch infotainment center, sunroof, etc... Coming from a relatively basic 2004 XLT truck to this one is a huge difference. The creature comforts and tech advancements over the last decade+ is nice.

Coming from a leaf spring truck the ride on the new truck is a nice improvement too. It still rides a lot like a truck, just not a dump truck lol !

Overall I'm very happy with the new truck. But again, like you said, I came from a truck with NO PAYMENTS to a truck with rather large payments now. But if you wanna play, you gotta pay. :(

17 Oaks 10-27-2015 11:29 AM

I am on my 2nd 6.7 with a total of 50,000 +. Issues, a few, but nothing to blame on the engine, but rather the engine management system (computer). Other than that I have not any any issues with either or my two trucks, in fact I don't believe I have taken either truck in for warranty work other than issues resulting from software. Both times the issue was resolved by doing a reload to the ECM.

I bought my truck because of the engine, not a Ford here at all, never have been...that said IMO Ford just has a better product and the engine design I believe is a superior design. Ford released a clean sheet of paper engine and its worked and works well.

UGA33 10-27-2015 11:36 AM

You won't regret the swap.

bigorosco 10-27-2015 12:55 PM

Being used, the payments on this one wouldn't be bad. But definitely more than $0, lol. However, with 340k miles I do have some semi-regular maintenance bills. And yeah the (really old and worn) leaf springs ride a little rough and that 7.3 is pretty noisy so a little quieter, smoother ride would definitely be nice.

senix 10-27-2015 01:29 PM

There is one item to consider. That is how you use your current truck.

Modern (2008 and up) diesels have emission system that make it difficult for some.

Endless Idling, start and stops without actually going anywhere.

Low speed city driving.

All those things take their toll on the emissions systems. Keep your use in mind.

How would you use the truck on a fairly consistent basis?

bigorosco 10-27-2015 01:37 PM

Good point Senix. Currently I commute back and forth to work in it, so that's mostly city driving but not much low speed there or idling. And then once a month (more in the winter) I've got it out at the deer lease doing a little more heavy duty work there and then highway mostly to get out there.

69cj 10-27-2015 05:59 PM

I'm not disputing Ginther but if you get 21.5 mpg with a 2015 or up you have the exception to the rule. 2015 went to a larger turbo thus the extra power but there is a price to pay for HP and torque. I see many more posts for 2015 and up in the 16 mpg highway range than the 20 range. Just don't want you to get your hopes up if you don't get one of the exceptions to the rule.

No sweat man. I wasn't expecting anything more than mid teens for MPG when I bought this 2015. But twice now (unloaded road trips) I've gotten very good MPG with it. Once when it was still brand new with only a few hundred miles on it, and then again last week with just over 2400 miles on it.

I assume it has a lot to do with that pedal on the right. It's SO TEMPTING to push it, }> but if you can manage to drive like there is a raw egg under your foot, and baby it a little, good MPG can be a reality. LOL!

I seriously doubt it'll be a long term condition though. I like the right pedal too much to keep this conservative driving stuff up for too long! LOL!

For a bit of a reality check, so far since owning it since July 2015 and now at 2532 miles on the clock... average MPG is 13.0 ........ BUT you have to consider that about half those miles are towing my 13000 pound 5th wheel getting about 9-10MPG.

Ginther 10-27-2015 08:04 PM

And that 21.5 MPG trip DID NOT have a regen occur. :o

FishOnOne 10-27-2015 08:44 PM

I have a '12 with 79k miles. My truck has been to the shop for an emissions recall to reflash the PCM. No repairs to date and it's been great truck.

I also agree with points Senix made.

Pocket 10-27-2015 10:14 PM

I went from a 7.3L to a 6.7L earlier this year. Personally I'm happy with the change.

The noise, smell, etc all gone. The new truck is way more comfortable, and I thought my old one was great for comfort.

I put a lot of blood, sweat, and tears into the old truck, and I had a hard time letting it go. But in the end it was a heck of an upgrade.

Personally I don't think it was that big of a deal getting used to the new truck. It pretty much tells you when to do all the maintenance stuff, so that makes it easy. Just make sure you follow the maintenance EXACTLY as stated in the owner's manual. Creature comforts are nice, wifey likes the heated and A/C seats, remote start, streaming Bluetooth, etc.

If you're serious about doing it, go test drive one. The test drive will tell you everything you need to know.

Reminds me, back in 2010 this was referred to as the "$55,000 test drive".

When these first came out, the forum frequently would advise onlookers "do NOT go drive one unless you're ready to buy it".

The niceness of the quiet and smoothness is one thing but the way the torque is laid down from 1700-2700rpm is very hard to stay away from.

senix 10-28-2015 05:19 AM

to the op, it sounds like your commute and use is good enough to get the truck hot. I think it would be ok.

EGR system has to be worked hard on occasion or it can get gummed up (the cooler).

So some towing or heavy throttle sometimes will help keep it clean.

With my DRW and 3.73 gears I have seen over 17 unloaded.

Lol heavy throttle has never been a problem ;)

And would definitely like the creature comforts, as would the wife. Personally I can live without heated seats, but the cooled ones sure would be nice in the hot summers, esp with dark leather.

Amelio 10-28-2015 08:11 AM

I also use my truck to commute, 36 miles one way to the shop plus bouncing around town to different jobs. Truck see's 80-100 miles a day so I know it gets plenty hot and I use the skinny pedal a few times just to let this beast breath.

Since a lot of my driving is city my truck will avg 15.5-16 mpg it also regens every 200-250 miles which hurts the overall mpg. Now when I am straight hwy running 70-75 it will hit the upper teens no problem. I did a trip earlier this year all hwy with 5 full adults and a bed full of luggage...truck avg 19.5-20mpg

I dont tow all the time but when I do its a 28' enclosed trailer to yank my car around. Loaded with tools supplies and my car it comes in around 9k pounds. I had to pull it yesterday and I was smiling the entire time. Prior to my '15 I had a '12 with the 6.2 gasser. Now my gasser pulled my trailer fine with no problems. But you had to pay attention and anticipate accelerating in situations and it would down shift a lot and did not like 6th. With this truck its absolutely effortless....no white knuckle driving at all. It will pull hills in 6th which is just amazing! The power is always there and takes little effort to move the load. The braking and exhaust break make such a big difference. Now I don't tow all the time but when I do the extra money I spent on this truck is worth every penny.

So far I love this truck, however I do have the temperamental valve knocking issue that is supposedly getting a re-flash in March to correct it. We will see what that's actually about. Fortunately its something I can make stop doing when it starts to act up. Other than that the truck has been problem free

bocomojoe 10-29-2015 02:54 AM

my observations:
1. I keep records of all fuel purchased.
2. Wife would rather travel in our truck than our Buick!
3. We make a 700 mile trip (1 way) a few times per year...I try to maintain a speed of 78 mph...all trips have between 18.1 to 18.7mpg (Pencil calculations) for I-state portions. (Fill ups that include combined city I-state is between 14.5 to 16.5mpg)
3. Towing a 12,000 lb 5-W at about 70 mpg I get 10.5 to 11.5, depending on conditions.
4. If I slowed down some I think I could improve on these numbers:-drink

MG250 10-30-2015 02:29 PM

I had a 6.0 that I was extremely happy with. I made the "mistake" of driving a new 6.7 and less than a week later I bought it. The new ones are amazing. I honestly test drove one to make sure I would hate it and justify keeping my 2007 6.0. That all changed after the test drive.

Bluovlnut 10-30-2015 03:22 PM

I was in the same situation, I loved my 7.3 and the truck it was in.
I thought I was attached to it but as soon as I got my new one I never even thought of going back!

bigorosco 01-20-2016 01:23 PM

Update. Was originally looking at a 2012 but that one got away before I could talk myself into pulling the trigger. So now almost 3 months later I bit the bullet and traded in the old 7.3 F350 on a 2015 F250 6.7. Cannot get over how much nicer this one is and it is beyond unbelievable how much quieter it is inside and outside the truck!

senix 01-20-2016 01:59 PM

pics? Congrats.

LabCab 01-20-2016 02:11 PM

Congratulations! We need pictures for sure.

You are not the first to take the expensive test drive, or the last.... :-X03

I loved my 7.3, but this 6.7 and the new trucks are so much nicer.
Enjoy.
Pat

Congrats!! You did good getting a '15. The new exhaust brake is almost worth it by itself. Plus the new turbo, new programming for a few issues that needed cleaning up etc. Best of luck with it, and yes, do post pics with details on trim level etc, and check back in soon with your review of it after a few thousand miles. :oval

I love my '15 for lots of reasons. What I didn't expect is that sometimes I almost miss the old diesel typewriter sound :)

Since it drives like a gasser and is almost as quiet as a gasser it is truly a different driving experience.

scraprat 01-20-2016 03:58 PM

Congrats on the new truck!

Joe/GA 01-20-2016 05:31 PM

Congrats on your new truck. I love my 6.7. I had a 2011, but was scared of the reports and was planning to pull a 5th wheel full time; so I traded it in on a 2015. What a difference. The exhaust brake when towing is a blessing. The truck seems to have more power and runs great. The 2011 had me in the shop a few times, but the 2015 has been faultless, so far.
I'm always in awe when I see the MPG claims some make. I average about 9 MPG when towing my 16500 pound 5th wheel camper and get between 12 to 15 for average driving. I have seen 17 MPG when running about 60 MPH on a country road. That seems to be the "sweet spot" for the Dually.

Iceman1777 01-20-2016 07:44 PM

Would love to see pics. Traded my Ecoboost for a '15 F-250 6.7. Great truck, 20.5 mpg on the trip to the dealer to trade for the F-350 dually. 19.5 on the trip home. I think you will be very pleased with the 6.7. I for one don't mind the emission system. It would drive my wife nuts if the truck stunk like the old diesels and was covered with black soot. You can stand at the exhaust pipe and not smell diesel. Great truck!

santafedave 01-20-2016 10:25 PM

I went from an 04 KR to 16 KR dually. I went over to my brothers house to show off the new truck we have travelled a lot riding quads all over and he thought my new truck was a gasser that is how quite the ride is. I love the electronics I downloaded all of my music onto a 32 GB usb stick and the system plays all of the music without a problem. The remote start is bad ass also. I am getting around 17.5 freeway and 13 around town. I added a 75 gallon external tank so the weight went up.

jimmystoys 01-23-2016 11:55 AM

I came from a 6.0l so a big change for me. Like the guys have mentioned, its a lot more powerful, very quiet, that was the biggest one for me and just all around fun to drive! Your going to have complaints from your better half that your spending too much time with your truck lol!...it will happen. And payments!?.....won't matter after you get your truck...you'll see lol. :-X04:-X04.

bigorosco 02-09-2016 03:32 PM

Sorry guys, I'm a horrible member when it comes to timely responses sometimes, lol. Yeah it drives like a gasser which really surprised me, almost makes me miss the loud diesel noise of the 7.3. Interior and ride are definitely nicer, even with a lift and larger tires which surprised me as well.

It's a Platinum trim so it's got pretty much everything, except the moonroof, which was fine with me, didn't want that anyway. Not sure I would've picked that high of a trim level but since it was used (20k miles on it), didn't get a choice lol.

Had my 6.7 Gen II for about 5 Months, and love it. I really liked my 2011 F250, but the new 16 seems like a completely different Truck. It even sounds different. Planning a 3000mi Trip for next Month and I can't wait to give her a real shakedown.

troverman 02-10-2016 10:10 AM

bigorosco, great looking truck.

Gone is the diesel clatter. Gone is the smell. I miss those things most of the time. On the other hand, it starts up well in the cold and has a ton of power.

MG250 02-10-2016 10:27 AM

I'll have my '15 250 in temps as low as -18 this weekend. It will be a good test to see how she starts and runs. I plan on plugging it in for a few hours before starting it just to warm up some fuel.

Yep - me too. We're expecting -14 or so for Saturday, and Sunday still -7F. I think it will do fine.

senix 02-10-2016 11:09 AM

When it gets that cold run an anti gel. I usually run one when it gets into single digits for more than a day. This weekend we will be there.

bigorosco 02-10-2016 12:08 PM

troverman, Yeah I miss the clatter at idle or when getting on the gas. Still trying to get used to lack of it lol. Doesn't usually get that cold here, but it definitely starts up easier overall and when it dips down close to freezing and below.

bigorosco 02-10-2016 12:10 PM

Still trying to get everything moved in and situated in the new truck, was so used to where I had it all in the old one.

Still need to wire in a key-on wire for my radar detector if anyone has done this or has any thoughts on a good one to use. Had it wired into my old overhead console on the 7.3 with the mileage info and compass but this truck doesn't have this so gotta find a new location.

Pull the panel underneath the steering column - it just snaps off. Over near the parking brake assembly will be a bunch of blunt-cut wires. Use a test light or meter to see which ones supply 12v when the key is on, versus those that supply all the time. I'm certain there will be one. The truck should have this wiring bundle whether it has the "upfitter switches" or not.

Alternately, your truck has an auto-dimming rearview mirror. That is a hot circuit only when the key is one, but not much amperage.

Blend-Mount makes a kit to hang the detector from the rear-view mirror and offer a short pig-tail that ties directly into the auto-dim mirror plug. It works quite well - despite the amperage. Your other suggestion for a switched wire is also doable, or piggyback a switched fuse in the fuse panel.
