Transmission filter

Getting ready to change the external tranny filter and fluid this week, and seen my ford filter doesn't have an o ring.do I need a new one or can I just order. New from ford.

Iaff113 04-08-2014 08:28 PM

If you got the MC filter it doesn't come with one. I haven't changed my o ring yet with no probs. I'm no pro and don't know how many changes you should go with out replacing the ring

r2millers 04-08-2014 10:22 PM

I wouldn't change it without the o ring. I have several vehicles that I change out an oil element filter and every time I didn't replace the o ring... A leak.

What o ring do you order then? Wonder why the filter doesn't come with one

Iaff113 04-09-2014 07:45 AM

I see this one comes with a ring. http://www.dieselfiltersonline.com/N...z-09-C09b.aspx. Is this a ok replacement to motorcraft?

KIDkiser 04-09-2014 07:47 AM

Ntz makes that filter for ford it's just repackaged,I think the part # for the oring is 3c3z-7j126-aa

Because someone took it out of the pkg. I haven't seen any suppliers shop without an o ring, especially Motorcraft.

Iaff113 04-09-2014 10:33 AM

Yeah I ordered it from diesel filters online. Just got on and looked and they say right their that they don't come with the o ring.

amdriven2liv 04-09-2014 11:03 AM

Dieselfiltersonline does ship with o-ring for the NTZ filter. I have purchased 2 from them.

Iaff113 04-09-2014 11:04 AM

Yeah I saw that. I got the MC filter. I will be ordering the other one today

bismic 04-09-2014 01:49 PM

The o-ring does not come w/ the Motorcraft filter for some reason.

I would go ahead and use the MC filter with old O ring and if it leaks then go to Ford and get their $5 O ring. Most it'll cost you is 8 oz. of fluid. Coat the old one with a little grease and put her on. Wrist tight is plenty. The O ring does the sealing not the threads.

Iaff113 04-09-2014 03:02 PM

Yeah I changed the filter last week. Hasn't leaked yet. So I'll just keep an eye on it.

If it hasn't leaked in a week you should be good to go.

Iaff113 04-09-2014 04:07 PM

Ok hopefully it won't. But I'll keep watching it. Thanks

KIDkiser 04-09-2014 04:36 PM

I went to the ford dealer today to get one ,and of course they don't stock them so they had to order It.

gmcbride 04-09-2014 04:45 PM

Hope nobody minds a stupid question. I simply cannot get the filter case off. It is a cast part and I am afraid I am going to break it. Part of the bottom has already come off. Thanks, gm. :-huh

I had a similar problem before. When I used the impact wrench, my stupid self accidentally went the clockwise way, and even if it was for a sec, damage done. Once it's cross threaded or the O-ring is seized or damaged, tat bell housing ain't coming out. Be careful u don't strip those lines. I ended up stripping tat stupid nut off. It actually broke off.

I ended up replacing the whole unit.

Yeah I couldn't get mine off by hand. One tap with the impact gun and it loosened right up

It would be nice for an explanation.

It looks like NTZ Mfg's these for Motorcraft. Every product I find is essentially the same stamped filter.

Why would Motorcraft not include the o ring? Is it an item they sell extra for some more profit or is it considered not necessary when changing?

I really thought I changed mine out last time I replaced. Maybe not?

Yes sir. Ford sells them separately. It is definitely needed. I have never changed my o-ring ever and I had already been thru about 3 tranny fluid changes.
