Any updates lately?

Looking back at page 3 of your thread, when you were rebuilding your differential, this is the part I'm at right now.

Do you remember exactly what you ordered from Randy's?

Thanx,

Kirk

2- Rear Axle Seals (They sent the wrong ones-I had to call for the correct size)
1- Baffle and 1 Inner Slinger (They sent the wrong parts and I had to call)

I would suggest calling and talking to them to make sure you get the correct parts.

The quality of all of the parts was excellent, and they took care of the problems right away.

Thanks John! I appreciate the list.
I hear ya about being busy. I'm lucky to get a couple days a month to work on mine. It means I have to plan my jobs fully to take advantage of the available time.

I look forward to more pictures when you get the time.

Although I have not posted progress for a while, I have been making some. Once things settled at work I was able to get back on the body of the truck.

The Driver Side Door wasn't nearly as bad as the Passenger Side. I still opened up the outer skin for better access, scraped the old sound deadening material off the skin, and cut out and repaired the rotted sections.

Once all of the repairs were completed, I prepped the cab for primer. I spot sand blasted the cab as needed; there were spots that the previous sandblaster missed-the underside of the roof, the insides of the doors, around the window openings, and a few small areas here and there. I DA sanded every surface with 60 and 80 grit, removing most but not all of the primer that the previous sandblaster had applied. I went over every square inch of sheet metal, hammering out and weld filling as much as possible. I wanted to get the sheet metal as perfect as I possibly could before primer.

I wheeled the cab into my paint room, and had 4 of my employees lift it off of the cart and onto jack stands. I shot 3 coats of black SPI epoxy primer on everything.

I am very happy with the results. Although the sheet metal work is not perfect, it is pretty darned good, and will take very little body filler to smooth out.

John , that is a ton of work accomplished . Seem 1 thing that need attention .
1. You will need to open up the corresponding knock outs on the RS fire wall if you still plan on putting a '51 Magic Air heater in it .

Easier now than when in paint
Also a clean & organized shop is a happy shop . Keep up the excellent work/ progress

hulleywoodworking 08-21-2017 11:09 AM

Once the primer set up for a couple of days, I had 4 of my workers help me lift the cab onto the chassis. For the first time since I bought it, the cab was mated to the rest of the truck.

Cab Mounted-Overall View

I gotta say, I am thrilled!!

Everything lined up surprisingly well, especially considering the amount of sheet metal that I replaced. The rear cab mounts line up and fit perfectly. I did have to add a few shims to the front cab mounts; the driver side needed 1/4" added and the passenger side required just under 1/2". I made all of the shims out of 1/8" rubber, of which there is a piece laying on the front passenger tire.

Denny:

Thanks for the compliments and for reminding me about the heater knock outs.

Do you have a '51 Magic Air available? Let me know-I still want to get one from you, and I could use it any time.

very nice work

hulleywoodworking 08-21-2017 12:09 PM

I could bask in the glory of the installed cab for only so long before the need to pound more steel overcame me. I figured to start on the front clip, so I dry fitted the inner fenders. They lined up fairly well, so I started the repairs.

Both had stress cracking at the lower mounting brackets, but the brackets and surrounding steel were in pretty good shape. I pounded out the sheet metal and worked the brackets into their correct postions, then welded the cracks. There was some rot at the front edge of the driver side inner, so I cut that out, formed a new piece, welded it in, and laid out and cut the bolt holes.

Driver Side Inner Fender-Close Up

I didn't take any pictures of the passenger side inner fender as I repaired it; it wasn't any worse than the driver side, except for requiring a bit more hammer work to get the shape right.

I thought that the indent at the top front of the passenger side inner was an accidental dent, so I hammered and shaped it out. Turns out that it belongs there, for reasons that are unclear. I didn't know that until after it was smoothed out; I decided that I preferred it gone, so I left it smooth. At least that's my story, and I'm sticking to it!

I got the inners bolted into place, and everything lined up quite well. I dry fitted the outer fenders, mounting them with a couple bolts to hold them in place.

Inner Fenders Repaired and Mounted, Outer Fenders Dry Fitted Before Repairs.

Both outer fenders were in pretty decent shape, with the only real rot being at the running board mounting. I decided to fabricate the repair panels for both fenders at the same time for efficiency.

Front Fender-Passenger Side-Front Corner at Lower Fender Mount-Rot

The driver side front fender has similar rot.

I started out by making a set of patterns of the inside and ouside curves, following the existing fender curves. I laid out cut and reference lines on the fender, then rough cut some 18 gage sheet metal. I made a set of forms out of oak in order to have something to hammer the lip over, as it is "J" shaped.

https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.for...3501ee966c.jpg

Outer Fender Patterns and Laid Out Steel Replacement Panels

I cut out the steel then formed it over the oak patterns. I had to relief notch it in a few spots in order to make the curve, then welded the cuts solid.

Looks like you're making solid progress! Some nice metalwork!

What's the gauge that goes between the speedo and multi-gauge pod?

The PO had purchased and installed new 12V gauge sets. There is a clock that goes into that smaller hole. Interestingly, I had to form a panel out of 18 gage steel to fit behind the dash at this opening, overlapping 1/4 into each of the larger openings, because cutting that small hole left very little sheet metal between the holes. I plug welded the support panel in placed.

Thanks for the compliments.
