No clue, it hasn't been driven that much lately, just a short half mile trip to grandpa's and back. It's been run 5-6 times in the driveway recently for short periods of time, while working on it. No rich running issues here, I checked that yesterday. Can't really smell anything out the tailpipe holding it at 1500 RPM with the choke off. No black smoke, etc. I have found in the past that several short runs in the driveway will cause the plugs to turn dark in a hurry. None of these plugs that were dark were oil fouled. The sparkplugs were installed about 1500 miles ago. The plugs are NGK V power sparkplugs, UR5.

I wouldn't worry too much about it.
Lots of idling in the driveway, lots of cold starts will cause that.
IME, no amount of driving will burn soot off plugs once it shows up.

Carbon needs at least 1.300 degrees to ignite.

The good thing about it is all of the electrodes were DRY. I've had them all fouled as can be before from working on it so much, and 100 miles later all white, weird.

ArdWrknTrk 06-03-2014 06:38 PM

The electrodes were white, or the insulators???

The insulators! I'd crap myself if the electrodes were white like that.

Just drive it and enjoy it.

If it starts to cause running issues, plugs are only a buck and a quarter.

Exactly. All I need now is a license plate frame that says "There's More To Life Than Gas Mileage". We used to have one of those, too bad it got tossed.

Aluminum is ready to pour when hits around 1400°.

So if you get it hot enough to burn carbon it may do some catastrophic engine damage.:-jammin

How hot do gassers run when they are being labored?

Gary Lewis 06-03-2014 10:38 PM

Where? The cooling system? The top of the pistons? The exhaust?

Today (Day 2 of ownership). I took a few hours to start cleaning the engine bay, drain the oil, replace the ancient wipers, clean out the interior, etc.

Don't go to Advance then! Cheapest plug I've seen is two bucks, a dime, a nickel, and four pennies! :D

IDK?
Seems I always get 8 Autolite 25 plugs for around $10.

I sprayed some epoxy on that old hood and fenders I have.
The rot on my truck is pretty bad.

Time and money.
The two never seem to be in the same place.

I use Motorcraft plugs in all my Fords, Champions in the Chryslers.

Same. I figure if it ran great from the factory with them, why switch to something else?

FordFETruck 06-04-2014 01:50 PM

NGK only in everything here. Everything runs great with them. The old dodge van runs excellent with NGK. Hasn't had a champion in it since 1985.
