So now they're replacing dad's motor. Thought I'd add pics, seeing as its basically the same damage, except a bit worse.

Interestingly enough, once the valves were broken off, the chunks jumped into the other cylinders, ruining the whole one side. Not sure on the other side, because those heads weren't off. I don't know if chunks could go from one bank to the other. The turbo is fubar too. The goofballs were planning on reusing the heads and turbo, so the truck had to sit for a bit while they brought in new ones.

Good grief. That's some serious damage.

oldschoolguy 01-16-2012 08:36 PM

yup. Does anyone know whether the valve or the glow plug is breaking first. I've heard different opinions on that.

From what I know it's typically the valve that breaks first. I think it's often misdiagnosed as a broken glow plug until the heads come off. The valve issue has been known for about 6 or 7 months on the chassis/cab trucks, and it seems that the pickup models are just starting.

:-arrgh

Are these failures happening under load or both load and empty driving?

Toreador_Diesel 01-16-2012 08:58 PM

GOOD GOD!

That is some SERIOUS carnage!!!!!

oldschoolguy 01-16-2012 09:06 PM

This was under no load at all. Empty box, cruise control, level highway

There are parts everywhere in those pictures! It's amazing anyone can put all of that back together and have it work right!

Dim Sum 01-16-2012 09:12 PM

Could you share how many miles are on the truck and when the truck was made?

Unloaded.....

oldschoolguy 01-16-2012 09:15 PM

Oh, and I might mention, the guy working on it says he has heard that about 800 have had this problem

oldschoolguy 01-16-2012 09:28 PM

It has 26000 kms, 15000 miles. Not sure on the build date. Once we get the truck back, I may be able to look that up for ya.

And the pictures make the work area look messier than it actually is. The cab is up on the hoist, and there is a sheet of plywood laying across the frame and transmission where the parts are all laying.

Dim Sum 01-16-2012 09:30 PM

When my 2010 was on the lift, it was the same way with the parts. Be careful. I had to tighten my cab bolts b/c they didn't torque them high enough and the cab would pop when I hit pot holes!

Its a lot of stuff, but a good tech will get it back together and you won't even know the cab was off.

Dad informed them he would raise hell if anything squeaked or clunked or rubbed etc. That's his biggest fear, so they know what they're up against there

I would be curious if a significant portion of those are chassis cabs not pick-ups.

Not that I would want it to happen to me, but that is still a very low number considering how many of these trucks are out there. And you don't know the history of some of those.....modifications or how they are treated.
