MERCON won't damage the seals on your old C6. It will, however, completely destroy the clutches and bands, requiring a rebuild.
Ford switched to MERCON from Type F in either 1977 or 1978. A 1976 C6 MUST have Type F or the frictions are going to slip and destroy themselves. |

Thanks Mark !!!:-wink Once again you saved my BUTT and I am glad I asked you before doing anything. So for now I guess I just leave it alone until I find type F. Which I don't see happening because I don't think I have seen type F in at least 15 years. But I haven't looked for it either.

Ford won't have it. I don't know of any other fluid that is compatible with Type F. Quite a few auto parts stores still sell Type F. If they don't have it in stock the better stores can order it.

I would think Ford would have it. If not, Is there something out there that would be compatible with type F?
I'll do that Mark start checking parts stores and stock up when I do find it. |

Mercon
Hi Mark, I have a buddy that did his tranny flush, he has a 2000 f-250 7.3 automatic, I told him to use mercon v or moble 1 synthetic, he could only find mecon dextron his said. Is that going to hurt his transmission? Does he need to drain and reflush with correct fluid?

Used it for years, real good luck with it. I guess we'll see what happens

Ok, thanks Mark, I will let him know, so far my transmission is working perfect, Im the guy that has the 2001 ford F-350 7.3 with 28,000 original miles, just had it flushed with the correct fluid, am hoping that it lasts for many more miles, also will be installing the 6.0 cooler soon.
Thanks, Terry |
Ed, I still use type F in my 2 73 fords. I just bought 15 quarts from Advance Auto about a month ago. They have it on the shelf.
Mark, I had my orginal C6 from my 75 F150 rebuilt in 01 and before that I used Type F and after the rebuild I asked the guy if I still use Type F and he said no that I need to use mercon. Would those new parts he installed be for use with mercon and not type F? |
If he installed parts that were designed to be used with MERCON, then that is what you should use.

An 01 with 28,000 orginal miles...damn that must be nice. Like John said must still have that new truck smell.
|
Thanks for the complements, I purchased it from the original owner, the truck has never been driven in the winter, it is all stock, it even had the original date coated firestone steeltex tires on the truck when I purchased it. The truck is in showroom condition, I also plan on storing it for the winter months as well. I plan on leaving it bone stock with the exception of adding a 6.0 tranny cooler.

That's simply amazing! A great find for sure!
