Coming down is the hard part. Especially when you have to turn out midslope!

Most of the chutes they show, have alternative ways down. If there is a bad descent, we throw an old drive belt over the ski to increase drag. I have also used my electronic reverse to keep my speed down, but you gotta keep it slow the whole way down or you will damage things:)

You wear one of those inflatable neck bags?

J_E_Summit 06-11-2010 01:33 PM

I don't own an Avy Pack yet. While they are pretty effective, they are also very expensive and I decided to spend my money on a good probe/beacon/shovel combo.

One day I will buy an avy pack, but I am hoping the price will come down on them once they become more common.

wildstang 06-11-2010 02:13 PM

Expensive like $1000 or less?

J_E_Summit 06-11-2010 03:02 PM

Up here, the model that is in the video is over $600.

You want to make sure that you are out of the trees before you take the safety off of the rip cord. I have seen someone wipe out pretty bad when the rip cord got caught on a branch and deployed the bag:) His sled went between the trees, so he was lucky.

thats why i like keep my feet firmly on the ground. that why i like stock cars.

J_E_Summit 06-11-2010 03:26 PM

The sled stays planted to the snow

Unless I am dropping a cornice, or jumping:-X04

wildstang 06-11-2010 04:03 PM

I would rather crash on snow then pavement. :D

J_E_Summit 06-11-2010 04:11 PM

Yes, that has some advantages.

Gotta watch out for the trees and rocks though:)

FORD RANGER 06-11-2010 05:17 PM

yeah i hear that.

J_E_Summit 06-11-2010 05:20 PM

Personaly, I haven't hurt myself on a tree or rock yet, well not when sledding:)

I friend got one heck of a concusion when he hit a tree one time. Cracked his helmet too.

wildstang 06-11-2010 05:23 PM

That would take a pretty hard hot to crack one.

J_E_Summit 06-11-2010 05:28 PM

Yeah it must have been.

I wasn't there at the time.

I guess the rest of the group hit the trail to the alpine before him. He had told them that he would meet them at the cabin. When he showed up he didn't know where or who he was. I don't know he blacked out, but he completly missed a 90d corner half a click from the parking lot. Somehow his sled missed all the trees, but he made contact with one.

wildstang 06-11-2010 05:33 PM

Lucky he got it together enough to ride out and that the sled didn't get wrecked.

J_E_Summit 06-11-2010 05:35 PM

Yep. I spent an hour on the phone talking to him, just to keep him awake. He didn't exactly contribute much to the conversation:)
