So, everybody just stood around and watched dear old dad do all the work? That's what it looks like anyway :) "Thanks, kid."

Started rebuilding the carburetor for my upcoming engine swap:

Around dinner time, I was to the point of drilling out the tamper-resistant plugs over the mixture control screws, and decided I need to go get a better drill bit to get through the hardened steel. I'll finish it up either tomorrow or Monday.

Insulated the cab roof and re-installed my headliner.

Old gal is finally home with a fresh rebuild on the transmission. RV shift kit, modern drum and output shaft, and reworked valve body, among other things make the already beefy C6 more monstrous (mwahahahahaha).

I got the fuel system flushed out on the monster truck and fired back up again. It's been sitting for a while and I must've put gas with alcohol in it at some point. The alcohol settled out and it was trying to run on 100% alcohol. (that didn't go well) Anyway, it's running good again.

Well, this weekend, I had the oil and tranny pans off, and replace each of their gaskets, which meant in order to get the pans off, I had to remove the transmission mount, cross member, exhaust, left bank header, starter, front driveline, and transmission lines........LOADS of fun. Once the pans were back in, I put new Stage 8 keepers on the header, and put everything back in place. I haven't taken any pictures of the finished part, but here's a couple of the pans being off. You can see Tim's handiwork in the block, with the 4-bolt main caps, and the H-beam connecting rods.....gotta love that 434.

Electrolysized the main battery tray, repaired a couple of holes, and then blew it apart because its got nooks and crannies that needed treatment. Applied POR to the entire pitted tray, pitted areas on the bottom, and those areas of the brackets which will be inaccessible when assembled.

The auxiliary battery tray is taking its turn in the vat for an identical treatment.

Today: Replaced the steering gear with a rock auto rebuild. It seems to be of good quality so far, but we will see a few months down the road. I just couldn't do the price of a redhead rebuild.

I also ordered an HEI distributor and a Holley electric fuel pump. I still cannot get the issues sorted out with the truck running right. All of that and another double pumper should be going on the truck this weekend!

Curious to hear your thoughts on the holley pump. Reviews Ive read all said it was too loud, for the red or blue. Good luck I hope it all solves your problem.:-X22

Replaced the original brake hoses with longer braided stainless steel ones. Unfortunately the rear one is leaking a bit from the crimp on the hose - darn. Also replaced the front differential oil - next weekend I'll tackle the rear differential.

omegaman13 02-17-2015 11:14 PM

Re-attached passenger side view mirror. Looks like at one point it got hung up on a tree out in the bush and totally ripped out the bolts from the door, leaving holes in the metal door panel about twice the size of the originals. Went to Ace and picked up some washers and bolts, pulled off the panel and snaked through to re-connect and affix the mirror back on. Believe it or not 90% of all my cabin noise came from a 50/50 mix of crappy door panels, and that side view mirror rattling against the door.

I got underneath the truck to look at the rear axle. Ordering all of the parts to rebuild the rear brakes tonight. New drums, shoes, cylinders, and a brake bleed. While I was underneath I saw that the rear differential has a small leak at the rain plug. I honestly do not think that this truck has ever had fluids changed besides the oil in its lifetime. Sometimes I wonder how it runs. Once I get the brakes in order I'll focus on the sloppy steering issues, then I'll feel a lot more comfortable driving it around.

I have also read that these electric pumps can be extremely loud. I was looking at Summit's house brand pump and from the reviews it seemed worse than a Holley. So I ordered a Holley red in hopes that it wont be obnoxious. I plan on mounting it with rubber isolator pads to help with vibration. Once this snow is over and I can get the pump on, I will be sure to report my findings.

I also ordered a toggle switch to hide under the dash for anti-theft. That truck might get out of the parking lot on the fuel bowls.

Little things like an MSD cap and cleaned up my wire routing a bit.

I had a Holley Red that went through 4 vehicles in 10 years and now it needs a rebuild, mount it near the tank and you won't hear it much if at all, it will also help with the pump priming with it being as close to the tank as possible.
