My 98 has only 90k on the clock. I've been living with either Max air or full heat for a long time. It's great to be able to control the temperature here in Central Florida. We seldom need full heat. Often need cold air, but not Max air, which makes the windows fog due to no fresh air entering the cab. Looking forward to many more years with the truck now.

Hi folks,

I'm rather new here but have been scouring this forum looking for a solution to my problem.

I have a 2003 Ford Ranger Edge 6 cyl 3.0L engine. I originally had the vent stuck in the defrost position which I understand is a vacuum problem. So I looked around and found the round vacuum accumulator. And sure enough, near the front of the engine the small plastic vacuum line was melted in half near the alternator. So I cut the bad ends off and bought me some vacuum hose with an ID small enough to slip over the top of the small tube. Well, that fixed the damper problem but carefully looking at the vacuum accumulator, there is another small plastic vacuum hose running from the bottom of the accumulator to the HVAC box inside the engine compartment and THIS small plastic vacuum line is also melted away (WHY did Ford do this?). OK, so I was going to fix this and find out where this line run and found a larger diameter vacuum line near the rear of the engine. This hose was plugged with a plastic carpet plug! I believe there may be a check valve and other things in this line but I need a vacuum hose diagram to be sure.

BTW, I tried to find this in my Haynes Repair Manual and it sucks (pun intended) as there is NO information on vacuum routing.

Could someone please point me to a vacuum diagram for a 2003 Ranger? I looked at the one someone posted for the 1998 and it appeared to be confusing and not what I had. It only shows one line on the vacuum tank and mine has two. I understand my 4x4 switch also uses vacuum and this may help the intermittent problems I had last year with this.

Regarding the vacuum reservoir, my '98 Ranger has two vacuum lines coming off of it, one line is from the engine manifold and it provides vacuum to the reservoir; the other line feeds the main Heater/AC Selector switch (it also splits off to supply vacuum to the Pulse Vacuum Hubs (PVH) solenoid, which your '03 does not have).

There are other vacuum lines under the hood that are on vacuum "circuits" which are separate from the HVAC supply (EGR system, EVAP system, brake booster, e.g.). So it's possible that the plugged hose you are referring to is not actually a part of the HVAC control system, but something else.

The HAVC vacuum hose diagram that you referred to, which I posted in a few previous threads, is the only one I know of.

BUMP: Update!!!

Thought I'd add a link to Bob K.'s fix for his blend door woes. Probably a good idea to review his findings before trying the nail fix, as that attempt & others didn't last for him as the plastic continued to fracture. His fix was to use the Dorman replacement blend door with the metal attachment on the actuator end.
