Thanks for your advice 428cj, I will get a different intake and get a 750 cfm carb.. I have headers dual exhaust 3'' to flowmasters and 2.25'' outlet of flowmasters with H-pipe. I know that the 3.5 to 3.70 gears will perform better but, I will be tacked up on the highway @ 70 mph. with the 3.70's. I might try the 3.50's?Thanks again 428cj for your knowledge and time, zrxlover.

Horsepower anyone?
[quote=Ford428CJ;6953542]I would run the C8's with a 2.09In And a 1.66Ex. They used those same heads with that Valve size on the 428PI's.
Later I would upgrade some of your parts to help get the most out of your engine. I would run one of these intakes: ED Streetmaster, Holley Street Dominator, ED F-427, Fords PI, ED RPM and so on. I also would change your carb to at least a 650-750 Holley carb. Next would be headers (if you dont have them already) with 2.5" dual exhaust. Also a cheap set of Roller Rockers (like Comps, or the ones I listed). Also a set of 3.5 to 3.7 gears will help a ton! But you might like your 3.25 gears..... Like I have said, do it over time and you will get there. Those things I have listed will help get the most out of your 390 and you will be able to drive it everyday with out affecting your street ability. It would be a "VERY" good start!!! JMHO[/quote My 390 with:flat-tops,Crane 274 cam, Edelbrock Streetmaster intake,Edelbrock 750 cfm carb.,Accel super coil, C-8ae-h heads with stock valves(2.02/1.55)Headers with H-pipe, TCI 1800 stall, flowmaster mufflers. What kind of power this combination will make? |
Not to hijack the thread, but what is a fair price if there is one, for a set of rebuilt C8AE-H heads? I found a set that have been milled to 70cc's, new stainless CJ valves, 3 angle valve job, hardened seat, new guides, and new springs. The asking price is $550 for these heads.
Thanks |
Fair price for C-8ae-H heads
Just my opinion,$550 doesn't sound like a bad price for all the upgrades that you listed? If I were you I would buy those heads. If I am right the C8ae-H heads have 69 cc. chambers stock?I hope this helps, zrxlover?

Book says 67-70cc. I got a set just like that for the same price. It was cheaper than the valve job quotes. Do they also have springs "up to .600"? Cause you are probly buying from the same people as I did if so. No complaints with them.
Dyno says about 355hp 445lb ft. |

$550 for a set of 'ready to go' heads looks pretty fair. I've recently picked up a salvage C6AE-R head for $75. Machine work estimate for the set is $500 -- covers new guides, new valves and new hardened exhaust seats.

Vapor lock in fuel line
I have a problem with the fuel vapor locking in the fuel line. I had a clear plastic inline filter, I replaced it with a metal inline filter and that helped. It doesn't shut off any more but, it bucks from a stop when the weather is > 94 deg.F..I re-routed the fuel line away from any heat source but, It still bucks from a stop. Would a fuel regulator or a electric fuel pump help? Does anyone know how to correct this problem?

Advancing timing
To anyone out there, I have a 390 with a Crane 272 cam, flat-top pistons,Edelbrock Streetmaster intake,Accel super coil,C8AE-H heads, 750 Edelbrock carb.,etc.I am giving some of this information, maybe this helps. I set my timing by ear two months ago. I just checked my total timing with a timing light @ 3000 rpms and it is 42 deg. advanced with the vacuum advance off and plugged.Does this seem to high or is this normal for my build? The engine runs fine no popping or missing. Let me know if you have any thoughts about 42 deg. advanced @ 3000 rpms? Thanks.
