I did get 16.5mpg before I put on ladder rack and all tools.Now its 13 mpg but I do tow open 6x12 trailer few times a week.

I have a 2012 F250 4x4 6.2 gas. I just recently took a trip from California to Indiana and back. I tow a 24' Dutchman light travel trailer, 6500 lbs. loaded. I previously had a 2008 F250 4x4 V10. I would get 11.8 highway not towing 8.5 towing. The dealer told me they had improved on the fuel economy on the 6.2. I was very dissapointed on my trip. The best mpg for the whole trip was 7.8. I can only imagine what the mpg would be if I towed something closer to my maximum towing capacity.

run my truck pretty serious. 15,000miles on it now. i get 10 mpg on highway 78 miles an hours. if i run slower it will pick up a little but not much. at 280miles i will be lookin for fuel. truck seems to run well but typical gasser and gets thirsty when workin it. still better than a diesel. my ford diesel would of been in the shop by now. its a single wheel rear axle stock tire diameter.:-X22

So...what gears you running with your 2012 SD? How many miles? Still all OEM stock? IE: not running larger tires?

3.73's all original, 18,000 miles. Also not pleased with the six speed trans, shifts all the time even in tow haul. Also has a real hard shift from 3rd to 4th while towing under acceleration, it bangs and sounds like the trans is going to fall out of the truck. I also wonder if the gear ratio's with the six speed while towing is responsible for the poor fuel economy.

Must be something wrong or bad gas. I get up around 9-10 towing. I have 35' TT weighing about 8700lbs, and I put a golf cart in the bed too. I have noticed that the brand of gas really makes a big difference, almost 1-1.5 mpg. I only use Shell and Mobil now, and try to find gas without ethanol in it, almost impossible around here in MI, but will look when out of state.

Definitely need to visit the dealer for the trans issue. They have TSB's out...and either flash the trans or replace the solenoids inside. Depends on your SD build date.

YES...the 3.73...not the best combo for the 6.2L...IMHO. I'd much rather see the 4.10 as standard...and keeping the 4.30 as optional.:-X15

Here is a TIP: Have read a lot on FTE...how folks are using the (M) manual mode more when towing. Allows the driver to keep the truck in the gear that is best for the situation...and keeps the rpm's in the right area.

But I have looked at that, all the stations around me are about 30 miles away. Not worth the drive. And I think 2 of them are mareinas and they way over charge for the gas.

Only IF you own stock in oil - the 2012 is a dream truck to be sold...

Ordered ours custom and picked it up a couple months after. 500 miles later pulling in a lot and turning around to go the other direction on a highway, the truck shuts off and locks up as I'm pulling back into traffic because it never downshifts to a lower gear. Took it in...Nothing found of course, 10,000 miles later we're still getting 12.2 mpg average highway or in town, 9.9 when pulling our 35ft camper and it's still not shifting as it should, staying in 5th/6th gear at 20-30mph and dropping hard into 3rd and first on downshift quite regularily. Took it in again, they kept it 2 days and you guessed it...Nothing Again, unless it's on the system printout when testing then there's nothing wrong with it, right? The 2012 is very disappointing...I can't wait to unload it, too computerized and honestly computerized transmissions are not competent enough to make it a standard as of yet.
Even better was the excuse thrown to me "you get that poor of gas mileage because you got the 4.3 gear ratio". The difference in gas mileage from the 4.3 and the 3.73 is .5 mpg if even. Beautiful truck ... Piece of S.....we don't haul enough to pay the extra for a diesel engine nor the cost at the pump - We've been Ford people for a long time - and respected the fact that they didn't take the buy out, but once we unload this I think finally need to say good-bye to Ford. :(

The math = 10,000 miles at average of 12 mpg = 833 gal x $3.85/gal = $3207.00; I don't care how much money may not be a factor that's a lot of fricken gas and cash for 10K miles period.

That's unfortunate about your truck. I'm assuming you're in T/H when this is occurring? Have you tried manually shifting it to see if it behaves the same way? It may be worth going to another dealer as the one you're going to doesn't seem interested in acknowledging an issue. What did Ford say about it? (not your dealer, Ford directly)

The 6.2 mpg numbers have been out for a couple years now, they shouldn't be a surprise.

2000silverbullet - I have not gone directly to Ford as of yet, I will go to a 3rd Ford direct dealer when I get to our next destination and then go to Ford directly, it's not just happening in T/H - in T/H the transmission works a little better possibly because I'm pulling 9000-10,000lbs which possibly forces a more needed shift - I've played with Manual but not enough to verify. The point of having that Automatic is that when I'm not pulling/pushing and using everyday I shouldn't have to use it in M.
While the numbers have been out - we ordered this baby back in Nov 2011, one of the selling points was they improved "fuel efficient" and the 2 previous years were getting an average of 15-17 when not pulling. I definitely did not expect less for the 2012.
Slownsy - thanks for proving in point that that Axel ratio isn't a huge factor!! :)

I went from a 2011 F-150 with the Eco Boost to a 2012 F-250 with a 6.2L. I was getting 15- 17 mpg on the highway, but went to 10 when pulling a enclosed trailer. I just like having a bigger truck for pulling and towing. If gas mileage is what is important, i wouldn't suggest a truck of any sort. Just my opinion.

We absolutely upgraded from our 1995 F150 4x4 so we had more pulling power to further invest in a camper for family recreation - however when you research and talk to everyone who is getting that 15-17mpg when not pulling (to which I would be ever so giddy about) then end up with one that won't do better than 12mpg after 11-12K miles on it, being upset about your investment I think is pretty valid - especially when the Ford shops wont address the transmission instability because it's not on the "computer" printout. :-X21 Just can't help but feel as though you got the bad apple off the assembly line!
