Cool !!!!

Hi :-wink front end came out nice.... and that engine looks nice as it sits & i'm sure it is gonna look better when you finish it up :-X22 one day at a time:-X10

tingram83 07-07-2014 11:35 AM

I kept my build on the low. Didn't have that kind of patience or money to spend. Here is mine. I call it the Johnny Cash Special. It has a 52 bed and frame. 48-50 cab and a 51 front end. I kept the old flatty.

Nice truck!
This build was originally going to be a 'patina" body build, but the truck was so incomplete that it would of looked like dog crap without some paint on it...so it has turned into more that it was originally going to be body wise. Budget also went up with that decision since now have to budget in paint, custom glass, etc..
Chassis wise everything is the same as I would do with an original paint car or truck. While it may look like a high buck build to some this is a pretty low buick build, new stuff is used where needed because I will not build an unsafe vehicle, but really this in not what I would call a high dollar build at all. I have seen trucks here with paint that cost more than this whole build will cost, out of my league for sure. Driving it and enjoying it are all that matter, so enjoy your truck!

Thanks, engine is centered, that picture just makes it look offset.

made an adapter last week and welded it to the tank, extends the filler and goes up to 2" pipe to match the filler I am going to use.

Gas fill will now be in the side of the fender.

No biggie, always something to do. Just finished an engine swap in this camaro, anyone need a Z28?

Wheel size

What size are these wheels? They look good! That's about the size i would like to put on my F1

Thanks, I was worried about being too low but I think it looks pretty good. Just to confirm I had to check one of the real wheels at that height.

http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d1...ps194ee249.jpg

I like it, but not any lower, so (dont yell at me) I am going to flip the shackles back over (3" higher), get the bed installed, and then adjust to this height with blocks as needed. New shocks will now fit as expected. I need to weld this stuff in place so I will stop messing with it. C notch may not be needed, there is 3 1/2" travel available with the rear axle at this height, maybe that is enough? Made patterns today to make the notch but I will save them.

Wheels are 18x8s, tires are 235/50/18s, all came from a 2011 mustang GT.

Thank you, I am no pro but I do the best I can. Now get out there and tear it up, just have a plan and take care of once section of the truck at at time.

77 Dent 08-20-2014 08:53 AM

We actually just got through a restoration about 4 years ago and the 300 I6 is still running strong. Trying to decide if I should wait for it to start going out then do the restomod. I want to do crown vic front and rear suspension and the crown vic motor/trans/rear end. but anyways don't mean to derail this thread. keep up the good work.

drptop70ss 08-20-2014 11:53 AM

LOL its already derailed until I get my cab back! I promise it will be completed, just not as soon as I hoped. Meanwhile I will keep cranking on truck #2.

drptop70ss 10-28-2014 06:50 PM

Update sort of :D

Had to move the chassis to another bay for its winter slumber, cab chop is mostly done but my buddy like myself does most of his work while snow is on the ground. So this truck build will be paused for a few months until all the cab is back. Meanwhile I will continue on the truck #2 build.

Nice.

Are you planning on staying with those wheels?

drptop70ss 10-28-2014 08:53 PM

Thanks, yes I will be running those wheels and tires.

Rollingmenace 10-29-2014 10:44 AM

Looking good Dave... Two builds at once lol your a man of many projects just like myself.... I plan on starting my build around end of December ... Love the GT wheels I'm considering a set myself... I haven't found too much info on them I know their alloy ... Do u think they would polish up.... And what did you do to fit them on the jag front??? Adapters ??

drptop70ss 10-29-2014 11:02 AM

Thanks!
I broke one of my own car building rules by doing two builds at once, but this is the first time I farmed out something so I cant just sit around waiting.
I would think the wheels would polish up, I like them silver. I have another set of chrome wheels as well similar style but not exactly the same. I think there may be a picture of them somewhere in this build thread, if not I can find one. They were going to be for truck #2, but I like the torque thrust Ds as well.
Wheels are on with adapters. If the tire side clearance is too tight I will send out a set of jag hubs to get plugged and redrilled for the 4 1/2" Ford pattern so the adapters would not be needed. Gotta have Ford wheels even if the engine is an "off" brand.

Dave, I have been off my truck project for two yrs, but am back!
I got to get my bearing straight, blow off the dust, and pick up where I left off.
I am admiring your progress and the filler in the fender looks great!

Thanks, good to see you are back at it! I am looking forward to some updates, get that thing on the road :)
I am trying to keep pushing on truck #2 but lately I just cant seem to catch a break, my tow vehicle that I need for snow plowing in the winter is now leaking gas, I dropped the tank but all the lines are junk so I have to spend some time fixing that.
I also got distracted this last weekend and dragged home this 1956 dodge that has been sitting since 1983. It is a literal basket case but too solid to not grab and save, probably be a frame swap build but not here since it isnt a Ford.

http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d1...ps0607c55e.jpg

I have a lot of outside commitments for the next few weeks so probably no new updates on my end for awhile.

Jeff and Nicolle 11-06-2014 09:23 PM

I am gonna build an addition on my garage, first, so I can have more room to work on the truck. So I probably won't have any updated for a little while myself. But you got some good stuff goin on there!

drptop70ss 11-06-2014 09:45 PM

Ha we think alike, already planning an extension on my garage as well, just have to fit it in between everything else.

snailedupduce 11-16-2014 12:51 AM

Thanks for the hard work.

It's one thing to put in all the work to get your builds to the point they are at but it's another to take pictures and document your builds. I joined the board to thank you for posting all your info. I have a lot of projects, a 3 month old a four year old and two businesses and your threads are saving me countless hours of trial and error and/or research thus allowing me to tackle this, hopefully over the winter. I am having a difficult time finding a jag front end, they are so old, most junk yards that carry euro cars have scrapped them. I'm located in rural NE TN but I'm traveling to FL in a week and hopefully I can snag something down there. If you don't mind me asking, what are you paying for the front ends? Again, Thanks for everything

Wow thanks a lot, I think it is great that anything I can show helps out, I am just paying back for others before me who did the same. My builds are all budget builds ( I normally shoot for net $5K cash out of pocket for a build) so I try to recycle and fab what I can and pass on the info, most of us I believe are in the same boat as far as priorities in life and funds.
I have bought Jag IFS units complete from the junkyard for $250, bought a complete jag XJ6 for $500 (net cost after selling parts and scrapping the body is $0) and found one complete unit on craigslist for $100. I prefer the cheaper way of parting a car but it is faster to buy the unit already out of course, and sometimes parts cars just cant be found cheap enough.

56panelford 11-16-2014 03:52 PM

I don't know how you can build with a $5K budget, not saying you can't but no way I can. Everyone around me want an arm and leg for there junk let alone anything that is useful. I enjoy your builds and the way you do things.

Thanks!
The budget isnt easy, I have to be creative, and I realize I am not building anything that would be considered a show vehicle, just trying to build safe reliable stuff to drive.
I shoot for a NET $5000 out of my pocket. More money might be spent initially. For example the T56 in this build when bought by itself costs easily $1000 and up when you get into including the bell, clutch, hydraulics, etc. This engine, transmission, computer, harness, and other small parts came from a $1500 trans am I bought that was hit. Parted it out and I ended up with $700 in all of those parts. Learned that from HOT ROD magazine, when I was growing up there was a special issue where they built a low buck 57 chevy and used a camaro parts car. Net cash out was much lower that way and it stuck with me.
This truck is probably going to go over the $5000 but not out of control over, problem is the truck was missing so many parts the dreaded "nickel and dime me to death" is in full swing :D. Plus I bought some stuff I didnt need ($350 guages for example) that will push up the cost.
I keep excel files on every build and track every expense, maybe my next build I will post costs along with the updates.

snailedupduce 11-16-2014 07:21 PM

I have located a couple complete cars, again time being of the essence, the only way I would consider buying one it would have to scrap out (10.00 a pound last I checked) for what I have into the purchase price. I do not have the drive or time to part one out. I did locate a front end 140 miles away for 350.00. It's funny you mention 5k for your build, that is my threshold for pain too, but I am doing a turbo junkyard LSX build and I know I can keep it around 5k. I will not be painting this build so that saves me a lot of cash and time. I wish you had a picture of your first build with the cab and bed on, I'm very curious how low the truck sits. I have read you don't want it deep in the weeds, but I do. I figure I can adjust with springs etc If it is to high up front. I'll probably ladder bar a 9" for the rear.

drptop70ss 11-16-2014 07:50 PM

The truck should be around 6" lower than stock up front with a slight rake up in the back. That is a quick estimate since installing the jag dropped the front of the frame 4" and the front suspension still has to compress another 2 to 3 inches.
There is a build thread that was started and never finished somewhere on the HAMB where the builder notched the jag into the frame for even more drop, if you can find it there is a pic of it with the nose on. It was lower than I wanted and causes other issues like complicating the sway bar mounting.
Good luck with the LS build, I will be looking for the build thread!

snailedupduce 11-16-2014 10:29 PM

As far me posting my build, don't hold your breath, I'll take pictures and we'll see what happens. I'll focus on things that are odd in my build but I don't see the point of regurgitating your thread, but I will post a link to your builds, ha. Your t56 is a nice little piece, my neighbor has a t5 and wants to use it in his 52 build but doesn't know how to covert the shifter to mid mount, did you do that mod yet?

drptop70ss 11-17-2014 06:44 AM

I am sure your truck will not be the same as mine, so I would do a build thread!
I am not converting to mid mount, I am mounting a modified shifter body on the trans middle access plate and attaching it to the real rear mounted shifter with a rod and hiem joint system. I plan on using a console that will cover the setup so it will be accessable if needed but hidden from view.

snailedupduce 11-17-2014 11:59 PM

SOOOOOO. I have been eyeballing a roundhead light xj6 that is sitting in my area and had a couple beers on the way home and said wtf I'll stop and ask them if they are interested in selling the piece of lawn art, upon walking up to the porch, the car is much cleaner than I imagine. So after 3 minutes an old lady answers and tells me it is her husbands and he dosen't want to sell it. Another future crusher....anyways, when I get to FL, full steam ahead and I'll find one.

Björn 11-18-2014 11:38 AM

Read your topic great build
Have a question some one tolt me that the jaguar front had to be 3% lean back on frame otherwise when you make a turn the wheel will not turn back by itself when you drive
