    Well. A rebuild is NOT in my budget but I really appreciate the expert advice. Good thing I have a little beater Focus I can drive until I save up the few grand. I'm not sure this is something for someone who's never done a trane rebuild before should do. (I watched the 4r100 video on YouTube- pretty good vid but I'm not an expert like he is) I'm anticipating a cost of about $3000-$4000. Does that sound about right? Should I just consider a whole different trans like I saw someone else suggested in the post about the bad manual diode? I'll stop bugging you with all the follow up questions, hard not to ask when you got someone who's an expert that's willing to respond.

    Update- I turned my chip back to stock today. It got worse. It did however allow me to do a better job of taking more accurate notes. So it fails to shift from 1-2. There is no free Reving like I previously thought. Pure and simple- it fails to shift only from first into second. If I turn the chip back on my low setting, it will shift if I baby it. I have noticed I can take off fast and then let off a little for it to shift and then it's fine. Oh, and it happens at 20mph not 30. Not that it matters. Thanks for the previous input, do you still feel it's the same diagnosis?

    Hey Mark, I'm sure you get bugged plenty but since you seem like THE expert,I thought I'd try to get a little free advice. I have a 99 7.3 with the auto. trans. My issue is that about once a day my trans fails to shift. The trans is plenty warm when it does this. It seems as though it's failing 2nd-3rd. I'm not sure though because i'm usually not paying attention until it happens. It could be 1st-2nd. Its at about 30mph and driving as a normal driver would. I have a chip from ts performance that is set on its lowest setting but this doesn't seem to play a factor. Anyhow, back to the issue- I take off from a stop (like I said it only happens 1 time on any given trip) it seems like it makes it's first shift, goes into second and then just hangs there. If I give it more throttle it just revs up a little, if I give it more it seems to just totally slip and rev. Once I let off the pedal and ease back into it, everything is fine and it doesn't repeat it for the rest of the drive. Thoughts?

    Wow - thanks for the amazingly quick response!

    If the fluid and filter turn out to be non-issues...I'm assuming the failing forward clutch is something that will eventually fail and require a rebuild.

    Is this a situation wherein an entire replacement/overhaul is prudent or simply a replacement of the failed components?

    Happy Tuesday!

    I have a bit of a 4R100 conundrum and figured if anybody could enable an expeditious answer to it, it would be you.
    Vehicle: 1999 Ford Lightning with 88K on the odometer - used predominantly as a grocery getter with no track days whatsoever.

    On Sunday, I went for a drive, within which,traffic slowed to approximately 5 mph for about 15 mins.

    As I neared my final destination, I came to a complete stop to let people pass in a crosswalk. As soon as they had cleared, I hit the accelerator to move forward and nothing happened - the engine revved up but the truck did not move. A second or two later, there was a banging noise and the truck started to move forward.

    Remembering back to my days on various other forums, your name came to mind as a resource who would likely have insight into what this issue is related to and what the best corrective action might be to resolve it.

    Any feedback or insight you might have is much appreciated.

    Hey Mark,

    I have a question if you don't mind.

    I have a 97 F-350xl with 41k miles. When I take off I have to let off the gas as it shifts into 2nd or it seems to shift REALLY hard.

    Where should I start to get this issue taken care of?

    1999 F250 4R100 trans 5.4 Triton .Upon adding pressure gauge and temp gauge to the test port It reads maximum temp of 160-170 degrees with no load ,which I feel should be fine . I measured flow rate in park at idle and it measures a little over 1 quart output in 15 seconds . Pressure reading with wet gauge from the test port on left side of trans reads 70 psi at curb ideal , But in park or in forward gears the least amount of rpm's above idle the pressure goes to140-160 psi . Above idle pressure seams too high to me . I expected to see maybe pressure on the high side in reverse, which in reverse above idle goes to 140-160 . That to me seems even a little high .Is this normal or do I have a problem ? If such high pressures are not normal . What could cause this ? I 'ii also add that on a wet gauge o-140 psi above idle pegs out the 140 psi gauge . Any input will be GREATLY APPRECIATED ! My name is Rick by the way .

    QUESTIONS: Strain from HEAVY weight or Temps tears apart Transmission? Towing in OD= OK and just take it out on climbs? Orange vs Yellow Solenoid? PWM or a TCC On/OFF Valve in the Pump?

    1999 Ford F-350, 7.3 Diesel 292,000 miles, towing laden weigh 16,000 lbs. Lose Forward Gears after REVERSING for greater than 50 feet, 30-40 times in 2 months but would return after 15-30 minutes, finally lost Forward Completely. Teardown revealed forward Clutches Burned.
    Transmission rebuilt TOWING in mind: Billet Triple Clutch Torque Converter, Transgo Tugger HD-2, High Energy Clutches and New Steels, Drum turned w/ 3 additional clutches, NEW Retaining Ring. UPGRADED Sprague Clutch and Bearing, One Piece bushing, 6 gear Steel Planetary, High Output Pressure Pump (PWM Pump) with larger gears, Shift Solenoids (Mine was Orange, he put a Yellow in and told me it was for Increased Pressure, never heard of before)), New Center Support, Deep Pan, 40K GVW Cooler and Gauges.

    Aloha Mark, I've been reading your threads and hoping you could help. I was driving down a very steep hill with the o/d on in first and I noticed the temp started to drop. I checked the fluid level and continued driving. When I got to the HWY the O/D light flash. On my way back home it started shifting weird and my check engine light came on. I ended up changing the TFT Sensor and all was well for about 20 minutes. Then the exact same symptoms started again. I changed the sensor again. This time it worked for about five hours of drive time over the coarse of 2 day's and then the same thing again. I inspected the transmission harness both inside and out and cleaned the plugs and reinstalled the same sensor. the O/D light has yet to come on and the truck is now shifting fine but the temp keeps going from the cold line to normal but not all the way down like before. Any Idea what could be causing this? Could I have possibly gotten two bad sensors from the dealer?
