I keep looking for something simple, that could suddenly fail, like an auto tranny modulator diaphragm leaking & engine vacuum sucking tranny fluid into the intake manafold, or maybe an acting out/stuck closed PCV valve causing excessive crank case pressures.

Apparently only the RP 5W-30 recipe has elevated moly, the other flavors not nearly so much. The Shell recipe he used apparently doesn't use any moly.

What is the RA finish? Sorry im not following that one. Im sure it has to do with the crosshatch pattern. I do not know what rings are in it, whatever came with the engine rebuild kit.

It is a 4spd trans, so i am POSITIVE it is NOT a bad modulator sucking tranny fluid lol.
I can check the PCV valve but i dont think that is it.

Maybe someday i will get around to a leakage test and vacuum check. I dont have a lot of time to work on it right now and have several other projects also. Just trying to get an idea what to look for when i do get started.

I have used Royal Purple 5w30 in my 3.0 V6 Aerostar, 4.0 V6 2000 Explorer Sport, even a 6 HP Briggs and Stratton lawnmower engine and a 3.0 HP Briggs and Stratton gasoline edger. Zip zero nada, problems. All engines ran fine with Royal Purple, no smoke and zero oil consumption with Royal Purple.

How long did it take for it to start smoking after the oil change? And how long did you run the RP in it?

It started smoking the first time i drove it after changing the oil. I may not have noticed it immediately because its not bad at idle and my exhaust was run below the bed back to the rear axle so i may not have noticed it when i loaded it on the trailer. but i ran that mud bog with it and it definately smoked from the first run on. I got back home and unloaded it off the trailer and changed the oil again as soon as i could get to it, within a couple days, without driving it any more. but it has continued to smoke even after switching back to rotella.

Does it have a PCV valve? if the oil drain a blocked it could be sucking oil making it smoke. You can get a scope and look in the cylinders and valve covers to see what they look like.

a quart a day isn't oil consumption, its fuel mileage. start pulling things off til you find something broke. i had an old very abused 6.2 diesel that used a quart in 20 miles, you could see the pistons flop back and forth in the cylinders. i don't see any need for snake oils but there is absolutely no reason and no way that running RP is causing your trouble. something is mechanically wrong. overfilling? its on all the plugs? then it would have to be ALL the guide seals, or ALL the rings, etc or something in the crankcase vent system. its gulping a s%%t ton of oil. if you had some weird guide seal material that doesn't like RP but i really can't see what material that might be
