Brake rotor selection help! (First Post)

Hi folks, yes I'm new to the forum.

Pleased to meet you!

After several stabs at the search engine (and the human verification test - ug), I'm posting for some HELP.

I traded myself into a 75 F250 4x4 the other day. non-original cab... 351W, C6, NP203, Dana 60 / Dana 44 closed knuckle etc... I've no solid indicator of the chassis year btw. (EDIT - four wheel drum brakes!)

I have one front Drum that's obviously NOT belonging - it doesn't reach the backing plate nor cover the shoes.

The local parts houses seem to say I've got the "heavy" front axle, but none can get the "heavy" axle brake drum nor verify anything against my one good drum.

I need a drum (and shoes).

Info from the good drum:
cast into the drum - "Rudd No. 97499" and "B4L13" (I think) (the last is on a casted tag)

"Max ID 12.21"

(all given dimensions are pretty close, but not exact probably)
OAD - 14 1/16"
Friction surface ID - 12 5/32"
Friction surface width - 2" (2 1/4" were it to use the entire surface actually. 2" shoes are installed)

Overall height (total) 3 5/16"

The protruded height of the mounting surface from the body of the drum is about 1/4". (the other "uncorrect" drum is virtually flat across the outer face)

I'm not too worried with a lot of road driving. This truck looks to be a great beater - front disk conversion isn't a huge option (yet).

Too much info is WAY better than not enough! That's all I have...

Anybody got a helping hand?

TIA!

-john

Welcome to FTE.
When the part stores says heavy front axel they probably mean the Dana 60.

On the top of the frame rail, right side, just in front of the cab, the VIN number is stamped into the frame. If you can get that cleaned up and read it would help you a lot. Tough to do with the fender and inner fender installed.

One suggestion you can try is to go to the web site "rockauto.com". Look up a 73-75 Ford f-250 and get into the brakes. They show a number of different drums available for your truck. Click on the "info" link on some of the parts it opens up another window and gives you a picture with deminsions for the drums.

Hope this helps.

Read up on how to post pic's ( ya I know more $%%^& reading) than show us what ya have as well. And x2 on what Gary said about the frame vin that would be a big help. The use of a mirror to read it has been done and in some cases the only way short of taking off the cab. But again these guys can tell a lot from pic's.

I'll have to dig a bit deeper for the frame VIN. I had started looking around the passenger side motor bracket mounting area, guess I didn't go far enough towards the cab.

This thing has factory A/C box. Grr. More fun to work around.

Gary I'm fairly sure (?) it's got a D44 front, D60 rear. The parts house confusion seems to be centered on if it's 3300 lb. front axle, or 3500 lb. Incidentally, Advance, AutoZone, O'Reilly, NAPA, etc... seem to name these weights differently.

BTW, it has 6 leaf front springs, 9 in the rear I think.

.

EDIT - Frame vin is F26YUW400xx

Looks to me like F250, 4x4, 360, Louisville, 1975.
(The site's VIN decode seemed to be down when I tried it. LMCTruck catalog had it tho.)

Well, that is more good info to file away! Anything else there useful?

The word stamped on the drum is BUDD not RUDD
Are you absolutely sure about that 97499 Number ?
The Ford book says different

1975 FORD F-250 Drum

Can you post the Axle ID codes ?

D6TZ-1125-D (97495)
or
D6TZ-1125-G (97498)

You're looking for an overall depth of either 3" ( D) or 3.1/4" (G)

Thank You, yes I had looked at the rockauto page. Forgot to mention that, my bad.

there was:

CENTRIC Part # 12265016 Brake Drum - Centric Preferred - Premium
4WD; Exc. 3500lb FA; Front
(I believe this supersedes 12365016)

CENTRIC Part # 12265013 Brake Drum - Centric Preferred - Premium
4WD; 3500lb FA; Front

RAYBESTOS Part # 2618R {#2618} Outside Diameter 14.13" / 8 Bolts / Not Finned
Front; Four Wheel Drive (4X4); 12-1/8" X 2" Brakes; 3000 Or 3300 Lb Front Axle
(I think the last one I shipped was this 2618)

.

All things are pointing to the 3500lb. front axle.

FRONT AXLE CODE.. the best I could read stamped in there was:
165B4 608480 1
?

(I'm not absolutely certain about the "B" - it's been dinged in that area of the tube.)
(Several of those digits were not outright damaged, but "shady" if you know what I mean.)
.

BTW... I'm not seeing a lot of hope in the local junk yards. I did locate one with "heavy front axle" I can just look at to compare. It's sitting in a field. lol

steponit, yes I'm about 95% on that 97499. I will check again tho!

steponit,

You da man.

I was about to upload a drum pic with the "97498" (I detailed the ""grooves" to get a better read)

Drum
D6TZ-1125-G (97498)
I can see where I'd measured wrongly a bit, "depth" being different than OAH. Good to know.

Shoes
D2TZ-2001-B (Shoe and Lining Kit)
or
2007-B (Brake shoe)

Now, on to find the goods...

Thanks all for chiming in!
Wonderful help here!
Hooah!
