Diesel synthetic motor oil

I have a 2005 6.0l PSD, 115k miles and am looking at using synthetic motor oil. I see that Motorcraft is finally selling, not producing a 5W-40 Synthetic Diesel CJ-4 " for use in all powerstrokes". My price for 4, 5 quart containers is $116.66. Any idea who manufactures this oil for Motorcraft and do you think its specially formulated for PSD's?
Anyone ever use Citco Citgard Syndurance 5W-40 Full Synthetic?http://www.docs.citgo.com/msds_pi/C10006.pdf
Its API is CJ-4. $15.63 per gallon my cost.

The 6.0 also seems to do well with Valvoline Premium blue, but in reality, any of the big name brands in synthetic will work fine as long as it meets the proper spec.

Is it all right to switch to synthetic with 205K on the engine?

Absolutely! Just monitor the oil the first round before the change. As long as the engine has always run well...I see no issues.

I just did with 207K, and zero issues. Go for it.

I listened to a garage tech. and switched for one oil change. I had a minimal drip oil leak. After the garage changed the oil, my drip bacame a serious leak which required the engine to be removed.

I spoke with several truck mechanics and have heard war stories about similar experiences on Class 8 trucks.

Before the oil leak, ROTELLA religiously. After the synthetic, major leak.

I am not trying to cast dispersions on anyones product, but for me, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it"! I will stay with Rotella from now on!

The thing is, it's not synthetic that caused the leak..... unless you're talking about something that happened a long time ago with an old vehicle.

Switching to synthetics used to be a big deal years ago when manufacturers still used cork gaskets, and synthetics had wildly different characteristics than dino oil. Those are no longer used, so synthetics themselves do not cause oil leaks.

Now it can be possible that an existing leak is not manifest into something larger because of deposits and buildups. Some synthetics work very well to clean out those deposits. So an existing leak can be made worse when those deposits are stripped away. Again, it's an existing leak to begin with.

I think I stated exactly what you confrimed in my post above.

MINE: I had a minimal drip oil leak. Before the oil leak, ROTELLA religiously. After the synthetic, major leak.

YOURS: Now it can be possible that an existing leak is not manifest into something larger because of deposits and buildups. Some synthetics work very well to clean out those deposits. So an existing leak can be made worse when those deposits are stripped away. Again, it's an existing leak to begin with.

I will only use ROTELLA. My 6.4 only had 20,000 miles when this happened.

I pulled the trigger!

Thanks for all the replies. After seeing that Ford finally OK'd the use of Motorcraft 5W-40 synthtic oil, I thought I would give it a shot. Trying Rotella 6T 5w 40. 115k on my 6.0 and no injector issues, yet.

Motorcraft® SAE 5W-40 Full Synthetic Diesel Motor Oil

Usage
  • For light- and heavy-duty diesel engine applications
  • Particularly recommended for use in Ford vehicles equipped with Power Stroke® engines, such as trucks, buses and construction vehicles
  • Recommended for use in Power Stroke® diesel engines over a wide temperature range, from down to -20°F (-29°C) to up to 100°F (38°C).
  • Designed for new-generation, low-emission diesel engines
  • Can be used in older engines where the manufacturer recommends API Categories CD, CF-4, CG-4, CH-4, CI-4 and CI-4 plus
  • Important note: Not for use in gasoline engines equipped with catalysts
Features
  • High-performance motor oil for Ford diesel vehicles
  • Meets American Petroleum Institute (API) Service Category CJ-4, required for use in diesel engines designed to meet 2007 on-highway exhaust emission standards and requiring ultra low sulfur diesel fuel
  • Formulated with synthetic base oils and unique additive technology
  • Satisfies Ford Motor Company warranty requirements, as well as those of most other domestic and import diesel engine manufacturers
  • Helps provide excellent soot control

  • Provides excellent performance in older-generation diesel engines operating on high-sulfur fuel
  • Available in four (4) five-quart bottles or 55-gallon quantities

Lots of traveling in the next 10 days probably 2500 miles. Will check oil level to see if any leaks not visible on ground show on dipstick. Looking forward to the easier starts for sure as winter comes.

Good luck, and I have to presume that your 6.0 is at least 4 years old, so more good luck.

Best,

Harold, I do want to ask a question. If your truck has over 100,000miles, why would you want to use syntetic oil now.

It must be that you think this oil will extend the useful life of your engine. But 15 quarts every 5kmiles is a dear price to pay, IMHO.
