Clogged Catalytic Converter
I am getting ridiculously low fuel mileage. I have performed a full tune up (plugs, wires, cap, rotor, air filter, trans filter and fluid). My truck still feels anemic. It has a hard time staying in OD at 70 to 75mph. I have heard that these truck are notorious for clogging catalytic converters. Is there any truth to this? How do i go about telling if it is clogged? Where can i get the cheapest replacement cat?
Thanks,
Dave

another option, if you dont want to buy a new one, you could take it out (not so sure that u can do this) or cut it open with a torchand clean it out. then just weld it back up. i might be a bit louder though. But look into this only as a last option.

To tell if the cat is plugged, you need to drill a small hole fore and aft of the cat. Then run the engine and have someone rev it somewhat for you. Put your hand out to feel the exhaust coming from the holes and see if there is even pressure or not. Even pressure means the cat is ok and uneven means that it is plugged. You can't open the cat and try to clean it. A replacement high-flow cat like the one I have from Catco cost 80 dollars. To repair the holes, just have a shop weld it up, very simple.
