How much lift does the truck have?
Thanks,it has a 4" BDS lift with 35x12.50 BGF M/Ts. I am actually suprised how well that 6 gets around, but I crave the V8 sound and more power will make it that much more enjoyable. Since I have no crossmember under the engine it really doesnt matter what oil pan I use then does it?

I will get a pic of my radiator setup on monday for you when im back home.

The main point behind the oil pan swap is to clear the front axle. Now since your truck is lifted you might be able to get away without swapping pans. I am not sure how much lift you need to be safe though, it was just something I heard a while back.

Here is mine:

Looks like a nice body on it! Pretty much a identical version of mine except a 77.

Why not swap in a 400m. Its the best choice in my opinion. My last one lasted 200,000 and I pulled it just cause it was tired. Could have done 300,000 I bet. My new one has been changed up a bit and is way more powerful than the stock one. 351w is more of a car motor than a truck one. The torque of the 400 will make spinning the bigger tires alot easier, and I don't mean burning out.

I would have to change the bellhousing because the 400 has the BB pattern. The 351W was in trucks from early 80s-96. The windsor I plan on putting in will be around 375hp and 400ft/lbs,they are cheaper to build and parts are everywhere. I have nothing against the M motors, but a W is whats going in this one.

New question to add, I read something that I will have to change the clutch Equalizer Mount bracket the bolts to the motor. The I6 bracket is different then the 302/351 bracket. Does anyone know where I can get this bracket and what ones interchange? I found one for a 71-73 SBF online but didnt know if they were all the same or not.

My motor should be done in a week or 2 and I will be ready to swap everything over. I will post updates as I go!

I am guessing they would all be the same. I am not sure if you would be able to use one from a 351m. I had found that site as well and was looking at that. Please do a good detailed update as you do the swap, it will answer lots of questions people have for this swap.

300 i6 to 351w

Hey,
I recently bought a 79 f150 with the 300 i6 with 4 on the floor. i bought a 351w with a c6 out of a van and has low miles. I have several questions that would be very helpfull if they were to be answered. I need to know what flywheel i need to use for the 351/4speed setup? I also need to know what motor mounts will work as well and the towers and where thay need to relocated to? I think i know what i need for the radiator. but i also need to know what need to be dont to make the clutch useable for the 351w? If i am missing anything please let me know. Any help would be incredibly helpful.
Thanks,
Kyle

You just need a flywheel for a manual windsor, they are about $85 new. You need the motor stands from a 70s 351m/400 truck, they should bolt in the factory holes.

Motor mounts you can use these Extreme Duty Poly Motor Mounts,302,351W
There is also some cheaper oem style mounts for $19 on that site.

Buy a new clutch and throwout bearing made for a 351W, it should bolt up otherwise.

I am still waiting on my motor, should be here next week I hope, then I will have more advice to give as I will be doing it myself haha.

Well my 351w swap is complete,I didnt get as many pics and step by step instructions as I had hoped. But I will share what I learned.

Whats needed
-4x4 351/400M frame perches
-302 motor mounts for late 70s Fseries
-bigger radiator
-Different clutch equalizer bar bracket, 70s F100/150 with 302 4spd bracket.
-throttle cable from a late 70s V8
- I used a power steering pump and brackets from a 351W,
-351w alternator brackets but used the 300 I6 altenator
-300 I6 starter works fine
-300 I6 flywheel will not work even though its the same size, the 351w flywheel is balenced different.
-Used the clutch that was with the 300 I6
- Ford Racing shorty headers for a mid 90s F150 5.8, I had to notch the frame just a little for the exhaust pipe to clear on the passenger side.
- I did a full pertronix ignition "distributer,coil,spark box"

Other then that everything went pretty smooth,it is much more fun to drive with 400hp vs the 140hp I6

300 I6

Engine removed

New motor, 400hp 412 ft/lbs on pump gas

351W in

Ready to go!

New duals all the way back, used dynomax ultraflo mufflers and 2.5" pipe.

how is the 300 6 clutch working out for you, did you have to change anything or add anything to make it work? when you put in the 351 engine perches did you use the same holes as the 300 or a different set?

nice thread! that motor looks right at home in that truck. i'm going to be building a 400 this summer (it's gonna be 340hp/400ftlbs, and that's all before 4000rpm). does the new motor put you back in the seat?

So with the 400/351m towers, where did you place them? in the same location as the i300 towers? I'm thinking of going 351w instead of 460 to swap my low oil pressure having 351m.
