push button 4wd question?

my 95 has the push button 4wd system with manual locking hubs. I haven't had any trouble with it in the 3 years I have owned the truck. I was just curious if there is a way to shift the transfer case if the electric motor or some other part of the push button system failed? Like I said mine is working great, and I use it heavily during the winter and hunting season, would just like to know if there is anything I can do if I am deep in it and the system fails. thanks!!

Install a manual transfercase. I don't know what the difference between the workings of the 2 cases is, seeing as all I've ever been around is manual.

I know the manual tcase is better, but I don't have time or money to change it out now, have to work with what I have and so far it has worked great, just looking for ideas if something does happen.

I helped a buddy of mine replace the electric motor on the Borg Warner 1356 transfer case of his F150 a couple years back. Done a few t-cases over the years so my memory is a bit fuzzy, but I seem to remember being able to manouver the shift linkage around by hand with the electric shift motor removed.

With that said I'd imagine if worse ever came to worse and your shift motor crapped out you could remove the motor and shift the t-case by hand. You'd have to crawl under the truck, remove the motor, and use a little trail and error to get it shifted into 4hi or 4lo.

I've got the Borg Warner repair manual laying around somewhere, I'll see if I can find it and post up any usable info for you.

I do agree with others that the electronic shift transfer case, and auto locking hubs, were a dumb idea. If you intend to keep the truck awhile, and need to rely on your 4 wheel driving working in places a tow cant get to, then I'd highly recommend swapping in a manual case.

If you look at this, you can see the electric shift rod that comes out of the case. The electric motor spins the rod to put the case into 4by and 4low.

There are markings on the case (4h, 4l, 2, I believe) and the 'rod' actually has a trangle pointer. (see below)

Hope this helps. Oh, btw you have to take the electric motor off to get to the 'rod' before anything eles.
