yep, always restarts after a pump or two on the pedal and hit the starter and away we go again.

I am thinking I need a new carb. it is the original from 1962. but the truck only has 51,000 miles on it. the guy before me rebuilt it but still.

I am thinking someplace else then NAPA. They wanted $319. For a one barrell, I am thinking that is a bit steep.


maybe any other sugestions. I tested the advance by putting a vacum pump on it and it move back and forth. I did not find any vacum leaks on the carb.

When I ran the air screw in, it Kept running.

I am now looking for any other ideas. This will be a cool little truck once I get the bugs worked out of it.

I check the rear end today and it had a dana 44 with a tag that said to only use limited slip oil in it. I did not open it up yet. but it does sound promising. I wonder what the gear ratio is?

Sounds like at the very least you need a couple new air mixture screws and possibly a carb rebuild kit. If it sat for a long time with gas in it then that carb is probably plugged up. Also have you checked the timing yet? You might try running some seafoam through a vacuum line while it's idling and clean everything out good.

Sounds like you may have a vacuum leak around the throttle shaft in the carb, the bushings may be worn out after 49 years! they can be replaced.........Sounds classic, no matter what you do it will idle poorly and stall after deceleration. Squirt some starter fluid around the carb and listen for RPM increase and you will find the leak, just because someone rebuilt it, does not mean they did it right.......your float level may be messed up, many different things could be contributing here. Take the metal tag off the carb, and go down to Knecht's and get a rebuild kit, should be cheap, and a simple carb to rebuild.

 

I think I will just solve the problem by replacing the carb and be done with it.

I have replaced my carb and the fuel filter (twice) and the ole girl runs really good now.

Now all I need to do is change out the points for electronic ignition and the water hoses, test for strenght of the antifreeze. she should be good for winter.
