SO now we think its battery and starter together? Here's my question. How come it starts faster the rest of the day compared to the first start of the day?

1. The truck is cranking way too slow.

2. As for it starting faster later in the day, is the engine temp somewhat warm?

3. It sounds like a weak starter, but it could also be bad batts or both.

4. There is also a small chance that the cables between the batteries or starter are faulty. i.e. bad ground, dirty/corroded battery cable ends.

It is possible that you have some kind of cold start problem too, but you need to address the slow cranking first, because that may be all it is.

Thanks for the help all of you. I apologize for all the questions. I am still learning and all. Plus ive never had this problem. I agree i need to focus on the slow cranking problem first. I have replaced all the glow plugs and put a stancor gpr on it. So im assuming my cold start system should be ready to go. When it starts faster later in the day, the engine temp is usually up to warm temps. I will check all the cables, Can you guys point me in a direction to get to the bottom of the batteries or starter or both? I dont want to spend 500 on two batteries and a new starter if its only one or the other.

I'd check the age of the batteries cause they may be about done. Walmart has good batteries and are cheapest if needed. 1000cca. It very well could be a combo of both starter and batts. Sorry I'm not much more help for you james. I'll bump you up for more to see anyway.

If the motor is warm it will crank/start faster.

As for ruling out starter or batts, I am sure someone can tell you how to load test them. Taking a stab in the dark, I would bet on the starter, but I can't say for sure. Take a look at the starter... does it look old?

No worries brother. The batteries aren't that old. Couple years. Least thats what the PO told me. Guess i dont know how true that is but they look not that old.

Looking at the starter, i can't really tell how old it is.

Thank you guys for all the help so far.

I may lean towards the starter then. That's how mine sounded when my starter was going out. I think the super duty starter can be used and is maybe even a little cheaper?? I thought I read that on here somewhere.

When I put my new starter in I couldn't believe how fast it turned over compared to before I put the starter in.

I know it will spin over faster. The thing im getting at is.. if the starter and batt's are ok and say its the injector orings. Well now im just fixing things that sure wouldn't hurt to be replaced but certainly dont need to be replaced. I'm trying to keep in mind my budget and also not take too much money away from my go fast fund. I will replace what needs to be replaced. I just need help finding out which one or both of the two that is. End of rant. Sorry guys, i'm just trying to keep money in mind here.

Ian, what do you suggest. I am looking at DB electrical's website. 95 for the high torque one and 75 for the replacement. Or like 189 for the replacement down at Oriellys (btw, this is not an option)

or option 3 is go get a used one. I saw one on PSN for 40 shipped. I will see if he still has it.

I wouldn't get a used one... but that's just me... all the used one's I have put on went out within a week maybe just bad luck

I'd try the 75.00 one I think.

I just put one on my previous truck 150.00 from Napa with my discount.

Thank you. I will get that ordered since it is the general conclusion of the group. Hopefully that does the trick.
