Gas Tank size

Hey guys i have a 2001 ford ranger supercab stepside with an auto trans and a 4.0l. The book says that i have a 19 gallon tank, but when its close to empty i can put about 12.5 gallons in it. So if anyone could tell me what size it is would be great.

Thanks

E and actually being empty are 2 different things. It is very possible that your sending unit is not reading right. My gauge is all over the place. I usually refill at 300 miles and thats about 15 gals or so. It should be a 19 gal tank.

You could always keep a few gallons of gas in the bed and run it out, but I still feel you have a 19 gal tank. More than likely its a sending unit problem. Its a pain to get to. Most say its easier to remove the bed than to drop the tank if that gives you an idea. A lot of people will say its bad to run a vehicle out of gas because it will suck up junk from the tank, but there is a filter in the tank and a filter inline. nothing is getting past both of them and when you are out 4 wheelin you are shaking up anything down in there anyway.

Running the tank out on a vehicle with an electric-in-tank fuel pump is not a good idea. The pump is cooled by the fuel around it and running it with little or no fuel to cool it causes a risk burning out the pump.

Look underneath, it should run from under the cab almost to the rear axle if it's a 19, It's possible you might have a smaller tank for the regular cab models. It will bolt up.

My 2000 cheapo regular cab has the "hump" in the bed to accommodate the filler neck, but also has one on the same side in the rear near the tailgate. Was there an auxiliary or larger tank offered?

I had a problem with my 1999 Ranger, it would show 1/4 tank on the gauge but the tank was actually empty. That's tricky if you don't know it's doing that. I picked it up after the second time, i.e., it didn't happen a third time only twice. Hahahahaha.

Anyway. I dropped the tank and took out the fuel pump sender assembly and checked the ohms. Checked ok so I just reinstalled and it seems to be reading ok now.

The thing is that the fuel pump inlet can be adjusted so that while the float is still floating the inlet is out of the fuel at times. So it seems like the engine is not getting gas while there's still fuel in the tank.

Pictures of the inside of the tank are in my garage under the 1999 Stan album.

My failing memory seems to recall that, yes, a two tank option was available sometime in the long-ago past.

My 87 has two tanks and is why I keep it as I have not seen another. Was tough replacing the rear tank as it is obsolete. I found some on Ebay thanks to a guy on here giving me a tip.
