They haven't updated the spec pages on this forum for the most recent years, but there are great specs for your 2000 van (and my 2002 E150). Here are the specs, which say 5100 lbs for an empty box van and 4700 for a Club Wagon (because the CW starts out heavier.) You'd also have to subtract cargo and passenger weight from the trailer--I think these are max weights with just a driver.
The van ain't gonna perform very well with the 4.2 and a trailer, especially in hilly territory. The OEM step bumper will take 5000 lbs, so that would be enough capacity without needing a hitch, if you don't have one.
