AOD trans on 390 FE
Looking to put and AOD trans on my 390. I have seen all the adapter plates but at $875.00 plus having to buy a built trans its pricey. I was wondering if anybody has heard of alternatives. I have heard there are places that take a c-6 case and put AOD guts in it, but have had no luck finding them. Thanks for any advise.

Well the cheapest route would be to put a c6 transfer and change the gears in the rear axle to like a 3.00 or 2.75 ratio to keep highway rpms down. With that 390, power wouldn't be a problem with those gears. I've seen people use 302 engines with 3.00 gears and they had plenty of power to get around.

Well, I'm not sure your AOD is going to like that 390.
I have a 390 with a C6 and a rear end geared at 2.80. With 235/75R15 tires I travel at 65 mph at 2300 rmp - no overdrive.
Of course if you like to spend money, you could always slap an overdrive unit on the C6 like those made by US Gear:
