Idle not falling in neutral

Hi All,

1998 Ranger 4x4 extended cab. 3.0L engine.

While driving and I push in the clutch at a stop sign for example, the idle does not fall to the normal idle speed. Instead it will stay at 3k or whatever it was at. It will eventually fall back to normal about 15 seconds or so.

Any ideas?

Acting out IAC maybe, it's a common problem part in idle woes.

When it does this, try disconnecting the IAC's electrical connector & see if rpm drops, the engine may idle rough or stall.

If the high rpm drops, try cleaning the IAC with a plastic safe spray cleaner, like CRC MAF spray cleaner & see what happens.

If that fixes it, don't be surprised if the problem returns, it did for me, but was a worthy trouble shooting step!!!!

Let us know how it goes.

Thanks pawpaw. That worked. My idle started working perfectly after cleaning.

OK, good feedback & to hear that cleaning seems to have fixed your IAC problem for now.

As I posted above, cleaning mine worked for a couple of times, but I eventually had to replace my IAC, so don't be surprised if the problem returns in a month or two.
