What does the smoke smell like?

I'm not sure, It doesn't smell great. I wasn't sure because most every diesel blows a puff of smoke when started, but my exhaust is blueish all the time.

I'm not sure what blue-ish smoke means, it could just be a leaky injector but I don't know.

I do know if the smoke smells sweet than it's a bad head gasket.

Blue is oil
White is superheated (partially burnt) fuel OR coolant
Black is unburnt fuel

Blue smoke all the time indicates bad valve guides and or valve guide seals or piston rings.

And sweet smelling (coolant smell) smoke just indicates you have coolant being burnt, not where it comes from and is not limited to a head gasket.

Should my exhaust have any color or should be clear all the time?

For my truck it depends at what point we are talking about; during startup when my glow plugs decide to come on I get very little or no smoke at all, when the glow plugs fail to come on I get a cloud of bluish grey smoke that smells like fuel. once that cloud goes away I usually do not get any really noticable smoke unless you stand at the very rear of the truck and watch the exhaust. For me that tells me along with what I would describe as a lifter noise if this was a gas job, that I have atleast one bad injector. My exhaust is more noticable at night when, i first start off and there are cars behind me.

For you it may be different, it all depends on color, smell, and if you hear any noises that do not sound normal to the engine. this is only my opinion based on what I have learned. the best suggestion I have is post a video, if you can of the smoke and maybe someone can help you diagnose it,

The lifter noise I am talking about is an obvious tick, tick, tick, tick, and does not sound like the clack, clack, clack, clack, they normally make. OK,OK every body can laugh at my description now.

I bought a set from typefour.

The way I look at it is that any/every injector should be pop tested before installation. We all know that just because the package say's 'New'. It just means that You have about an 80% chance of it working as it was designed to.

Russ not only pop tests them, but pressure matches them to within 10 PSI or so. Makes for a much smoother running engine!

Don't get me wrong, I'm not knocking what typefour does, I know nothing about him other then what I've heard on here and it has never been anything but praise!

Does he pull them apart to match them or just buy lots and test them all and match up!

-Enjoy

IF they need adjustment. He'll open them up, and shim them properly.

I left Type Four a message about the injectors, and we will see where we go from here. I can always get the standard set from Pensacola diesel.

I actually do it both ways, and they are within 100 lbs, the shims dont hardly come any closer.
Most of the time they come out at 50 to 75 lbs within. And it can be a time consuming pain but well worth it

Thanks for the info Typefour ...

I understand the pain, been there doing that, only with shocks & springs, not Injectors.

Curiosity has me though, I understand you buy Delphi's, I am curious as to what you find on variances across them out of the box ???

-Enjoy

I may be replacing my injectors soon, what does a pressure matched set go for?

Thanks!
