How do you tell a 7.3lt from a 6.9

My trucks VIN says its a 6.9lt, but the engine has 7.3 sticker on side of rocker cover. Its definitely a NAVstar engine, just not sure which? Thanks Trev

Its got a Banks sidewinder turbo fitted, need to know what the engine is because I have been told not too many bits are interchangeable.

if the engine is an IDI, almost all the parts are interchangeable on the 6.9 and 7.3
the powerstroke is a completely different animal, and is easily noticed, as there is a fuel filter instead of an injector pump in the front top of the engine.

One of the tells is that if it has a turbo unit - the 6.9's were almost all aftermarket (ATI and so on...)

The 6.9 is what is called an International 442-E engine, and works out to a 420 cubic inch motor.

The 7.3 is also an International design (You can have the name "NAVISTAR". Bag it up with all the other disinfomational stuff...) and comes to about 440 cubic inches.

A little known factoid is that changing the injectors to standard International Harvester ones and adding a crank from an IH with more stroke can do wonders for these engines

When ford contracted with this company (IH) to produce these engines, they (IH) had no intention of letting Ford Motor Company have an engine that was as powerful as what they were putting into their own brand - but many parts can be retro'd across...

thanks mate now it is as clear as mud, sounds like I have a 7.3 and not a 6.9. all good, now I just need to put steering on the right side and we are good to go. Is the Bronco firewall the same as the the F trucks?

I forgot to mention one other note:
The 6.9's seem to "rattle" louder, which make some swear they are a truer diesel...

Ford is the originator of the assembly line idea, so I imagine there are "KNOCK OUT" plates or spaces on either side just for that. A spot of sheet metal and a saw ought to take care of any problems, and I suspect the same is true of the frames as well.

*A plasma cutter would be a terriffic tool here...

Bronco's are an F-truck with a coach body. Every part of it is the same from the seats forward. If I'm wrong, I owe you a liter!
~and I expect you to hold me to that if and when I come down under next...
