power steering for 1942 to 1947 ford pickups
hi like allot of you other 42 to 47 ford pickup owerners i to am looking for a power steering box to convert my truck to power sterring.
i myself do not like the ifs and the way it handles.
also i feel it is cookie cutter and every one under the son is doing it and i get sick of it after awhile.
next there is nothing wrong with it.
but it is exspensive and not cheap like allot of people make it out to be.
also i am building a 50s style straight rod hot rod and ifs is not what i want and i am not going to use it no matter what.
nor i am i using a sub frame clip as the pre 52 ford trucks have to narrow of frames for the sub frame clip to fit and look correct.
so heres the deal my truck is not a ford but instead a 1948 ihc kb1 1/2 pickup.
it orgionally steered stock like a 48 to 60 ford pickup.
but i converted the front axle to a 1/2 ton 42 to 47 ford pickup axle for many reasons.
but mostly due to the avalbity of parts.
i am looking for a steering box to convert it to power steering.
my first choice was the saginaw cross steer box.
but this box will not work due to exshuast clearance.
next the early toyota box will not work either as it steers wrong.
also the toyota box can and is a problem for exshuast clearance depending on what motor and exshuast mainafolds you are planning on running.
so what i am looking at using instead is the newr 89 to 95 toyota box found on t100 2 wheel drive pickups and toya 4x4 picks and toyotya 4 runners with 2 wheel are wheel drive
the differance in this style toyota box and the stock ford box is the toyota box mounts on the out side of the frame as were the stock ford box mounts on the inside other than that the 2 boxs are pretty close to the same and mount about the same.
so i was wondering if any one else has done this yet and can give me any input before i start.
next i am pickuping up 1 of these toyota boxs thursday are monday of next week and with any luck should start seeing if it will work tuseday moring.
lastly i will post and let every one know what i figure out.
thanks kb48
