I bought a '79 F-350 Supercab 4x4 off Craiglist, Tacoma area, about 5 years ago. Since I'm Canadian, I have to have it inspected up here in order to legally be able to insure it for the road.........still workin in on it! Got really busy with work when I purchased it so taking me a bit of time. I believe most of it's original other than the 460 swapped in engine and some interior parts. I have the original build sheet and bill of sale off the buyer that purchased it at the time. I believe it's a Lariat with air conditioning. Intentions are to restore it gradually. I'm pretty excited about my find!
Dude! Nice truck!
Which province?
I'm in SK.

I recently bought a '79 F-350 4x4 which I'm restoring. Previous owner put in a 460 from a '74 Lincoln bored 30 thousandths over, 429 DOVE-A heads, crankshaft ground 10 thousandths on main & rod journals, stainless steel valves & seats and 4 bbl Holley carb. He said compression ratio is about 10.5 : 1.
Here is a picture of it:

I know the original post is a little dated but I picked up a 78 F250 4x4 Super Cab and when I ran the BOM numbers from the front and rear axles on the Dana site both axles were spec'd as Dana 60's specifically for a Snow-Fighter. Might not be the same for a 79 F350 but if you want to know what your axles are run the Bill of Materials # (BOM) on the Dana site.

Dana Site:
Dana Holding Corporation - The Expert Axle Bill of Material
So my front axle BOM = 610023-2 which is for 78-79 F250/F350 (Snow Fighter), open diff, 3.54 gears

Dana 60 front & rear on 1979 F350 4WD's. Dana 70's 2WD only, first installed in 1961 on some F350's (some '61/62's came with Timken B140), all F350's beginning in 1963.
Rear axle ID tag located on inspection cover does not say Dana 60 or 70. Ford & Dana ID codes have to be decoded to find out which is which.
Ditto Warranty Plate AXLE codes, must be decoded.

All F350 4x4's came with a Dana 60 front axle. If it has a Dana 44 it has been swapped. A lot of people would buy the whole truck just for the front axle and swap their 44 for a 60 and resell the truck. Back in the day you could buy whole truck for @ 1000$. Now the axles alone go for that or more. I bought a 78 F250 4x4 Supercab with dana 60 front and rear for 800$ from a car lot, tranny was out but he didn't know what he had. Also bought a Dana 60 from salvage yard for 400$, I had heard the salvage yard had one and I went to check on it. It was laying out front of building, I checked to see what gear ratio it had. 4:10 just like I wanted. Went inside and asked him how much for the one ton 4x4 ford axle. He response, I don't have a one ton but I have a 3/4 ton that will fit in a one ton. Bought it. This was back before most people knew what they were.

I can only say that the official paper version is that they all had Dana 60's. Which I believe, because it makes sense and NumberDummy said it.
But I also know of at least one single '79 F350 4x4 that was delivered from the dealer to the original purchaser with a Dana 44 under it. I mentioned this in another thread just yesterday in fact.
The time was very late in the model year, and though I did not take pictures I was so surprised that it had a 44 under it that I looked at the certification decal on the driver's door striker pillar and his truck did indeed have a higher GVWR than mine (mine is 8550 and his was something just in the 9's) but his front GAWR was much less than mine. Mine is 3950 if I remember and his was something like 3250 I want to say? That's just a vague memory though. I never took a picture of it, or wrote down any of the VIN and warranty plate info and even though he ended up trading it for a new kitchen. Yes, it was so cool the contractor had to have it and made him an offer he could not refuse. Friend was not hurting for money and had gotten his use out of the Ford over the years.
This truck was so well outfitted that even the die-hard Chevy guys in the shop (pretty much all of them in fact, except for one guy that was his good friend and was into Jeeps) would pile out of the shop en masse when he pulled it into the parking lot. And this at a time when these trucks were everywhere. His was that cool.
But it definitely had a 44 from the factory.
