Ford 6.6 inline 6 diesel swap into 78 Ford help.
Does anyone know the specs to this engine as in length width height weight etc.? Because i have a 78 f250 with a 521 in it and for my first truck its a little impractical, my plan is that my brother and i are going to put a 5.9 cummins in it, but i thought i would weigh my options, i was wondering if a 6.6 would tuck under the hood like the 5.9 will, the 5.9 will fit just fine, i just think it would be cool to put a 6.6 in there if i could, that is if its a good engine, id like to put a little power through it someday, the fuel injection pumps are good, and injectors can be modified, custom rods can be made, but do they have a

From what I remember, the 6.6 is around an inch longer than a Cummins 6BT. It's not as easy of a fit, but if you have the engine there, you'll figure out how to sneak it in. The 6.6's are a really good engine. Their main downfall is finding replacement parts for them. Some Ford dealers can still get things, and some New Holland dealers can too.
Real easy to make big power, it's just not so easy on anything else in the drive train. Figure your torque will be roughly 2.2 times the hp figures. Not really any need to spend money on custom rods, the stockers will hold up to some good power and rpm. Stick some ARP bolts on the rods, if anything. I highly recommend head studs! Factory spec on the assembly is 3990rpm. Tractor puller guys still use the 401(6.6) today.
There's not a lot of fans of the 6.6, mainly because of lack of knowledge. I'm sure you'll hear plenty of guys tell you the 6BT is the only engine to consider. The Cummins is a fine & dandy engine, but sometimes it's just too generic.
