Dip stick doesn't register now

I knew there would be problems when taking the engine out but its coming along. Now the lastest is. No oil on the dipstick. We have put 15 qts in it. That included the 1 qt put it after changing the STC. We have taken the tube out and put it back in and still doesnt register. What did we do wrong. This seems like such a stupid thing but no clue whats wrong. No oil on the floor or any leaks.

Was the engine dissassembled? A "dry" 6.0 can take 18 to 19 quarts to fill to the full line.

Because thats the refill capacity after an oil and filter change.
3 to 4 quarts of oil never drain out of the engine during an oil change as they are retained in the HPOP system, oil cooler, oil passages, etc..

I think I would take it slow and add a quart at a time till it hits the stick and then 1/2 quart at a time till you get it where you want it.

Unplug and replug the GPCM. Sometimes they are a bear to get plugged in tight.

Left it connected to the valve cover. Checked the other plugs in the harness also. Strange its all of the cyl. Strange this is nothing from the alternator. No voltage out. I tested it before we pulled it and it worked fine. Something must be unpluged. I wish I knew what.

I am not a mechanic but the ones I know at all say they fill to the dipstick, usually 1/2 on the cross hatchings. I learned this on my V10, it calls for 6 quarts but a change is really 6.5 quarts to get half way up the cross hatchings on the dipstick.

On the 6.0, I was just putting in 15 quarts, I learned on here it is more like 13.5, what with the oil retention in the system. I was overfilling 1.5 quarts every change.

I have always only put 13.5 in the engine on all oil changes. We drained everything on the engine though. We are sure the tube is in all the way and everything else is right so going to add oil.

ok the engine can take up to 19 qts as a bare block. depends on how much you really got out.
takes 17 with and oil cooler rebuild done the right way.

did you get the glow plug thing figured out?
either its not pluged in correctly, or the buss bars are not pluged in.
could also be the alternator wire to the battery is not hooked up.
now so far as long crank times thats normal for a short time. need to get air out of the high pressure oil system.

Thanks Cheezit. I thought it would only take 15 so I bought 16 and didnt touch the stick. I thank averyone who helped today. I was worried. I ended up with 18 qys to the middle of the stick. Gues we really got it cleaned out. Writing a post now with everything I put on it. Wow what a list.
