Hard to fill fuel tanks on my '96 diesel

I've been searching the forums and haven't found a difinitive answer yet. I have a '96 short bed diesel truck and filling the tanks is very frustrating. I have to insert the nozzle no more than half way and hold the handle manually to keep the flow very slow-the first auto-fill detent fills too fast and the thing clicks off. The problem is worse with the rear tank. I have tried many different chains and locations of stations so the problem seems to be my truck and not the pumps. Any ideas?

Have you checked the fill hoses to make sure the aren't kinked or twisted?

there is a vent tube within the fill tube, these collapse.

Here is some more info:

Take a look at item #4 below, that is the fuel filler hose that goes to the tank, it is probably 1 1/2 inches in dia. there is a 5/8 or so hose inside it that is the fuel filler vent..

i carry a 6X6 block in the back of my 88. when i fuel up, i drive the driver side tire up on the 6X6 to lift the driver side of the truck. this allowes me to fuel the truck without the pump shutting off.
i have been doing this for 22 years now.

I have the same problem in my rear tank at some stations. Front tank, no issues ever.

I've noticed the same thing on my truck. There is one pump at the station here that I cannot use at all. It's on a 10-15* incline, and sets the passenger side of the truck higher than the drivers. It is bad enough that I thought there was a full blown blockage. I've filled up since then on the other side of the pump, and not a problem one.

tjctransport: that 6x6 idea is awesome, I think I'm going to have to use it from now on.

the first few times i tried it people would look at me like i was crazy. but the guys at the station got used to it, and as more people with diesels were having the same problem, they kept a block at the pump for them to use too.

then it started all over again with the looks at other stations as i started working all over the east coast.

My dad has a favorite gas station for just this reason. The parking lot slopes down away from the pumps. He says he can fill faster and get more fuel in.

Maybe an air suspension is what you need. Like those kneeling buses, lower the passenger side whenever you get fuel.

This is happening to me too, on my 97 diesel. Pissing me off! Gotta figure this out ASAP, don't have all day to spend at the pumps to fill both tanks.

READ THIS FOLKS ... I know this is an old thread but this might help someone. There is only one reason for the older F150's to have a slow gas fill problem. No, it's not the EVAP system...that only is activated when the gas tank is pressurized. The fill neck has a smaller hose inside a hose. The gas travels into the tank inside the small hose and the air being displaced from the tank travels back up the fill neck inside the surrounding larger hose. That little hole you see in the metal at the top of the fill neck beside the place you put the gas nozzle is a vent hole. Provided that vent hole is not clogged (why would it be?) the problem is that the smaller inside hose was kinked when someone was reinstalling the fill neck hoses ... like after a fuel pump replacement. The smaller hose is about 4 inches longer that the outside hose and can get caught on the lip of the fuel tank entrance and get pushed back into the larger hose thus kinking it and slowing the gas flowing into the tank. If you are lucky you might can get to the hose clamp on top of the gas tank and fix the problem without removing the tank. Wear safety glassed as there will be plenty of dirt that will fall into your eyes!
