AFTERMARKET COP Setup

I haven't seen many threads about people using the MSD or ACCEL COPS as replacements or upgrades. Is it worth doing? Will they last? Who has done it and what were your experiences with them? I own a 99 F150, 5.4 Triton and have replaced a coil here and there over the years and wanted to make a big swing at it and replace all 8 at the same time. Do I replace them all with some AutoZone/Advance Auto parts remake or do I go with one of the reputable ignition companies like:
MSD Ford Coil on Plug SOHC 4.6L & 5.4L 2V Single - 8242
or
ACCEL
FORD 2 VALVE COIL KIT-8 PACK (140032-8) | ford coils | ACCEL
or even
GRANATELLI Loading...

I know that all have different specs so.... What are the facts?

The facts are,,,there is NO COP worth buying that will out perform or out last the stock Motorcraft COPs!
The ones you listed are junk and 99% of people have had problems with them all.
If your planing on replacing all 8, get the ones from ebay!
NEW IGNITION COILS 1997-2004 FORD Expedition DG508 (8): eBay Motors (item 110560707525 end time Sep-14-10 13:42:53 PDT)

I'm running the ones from ebay that are made by the same company that makes the stock ones on your Ford and I'm making 700rwhp with them!
And you cant beat the price.

I bought the same set for under $100. I have had a couple failures, but could be coolant leaks the caused their demise... All in all, buy the set for under $100. and keep a couple old stock ones for spares if needed down the road somewhere.

Here is a question that has bugged me for some time.

Unless you are running a blown or otherwise heavily modified engine like what phil6608 is running. What good would better COP's (Regardless of maker) in a 100% stock setup do?

ACCELS have a history of failure. They are made in the "PRC".
MSD; high priced and not needed on a stock motor. Don't know their failure rate.
Stock is the way to go.
Good luck.

i have put accel coil packs on and have had one go bad on me in the last year and have had them on for almost 2 years... the other one that went bad was destroyed when my # 3 plug blew out... i have a ld f250 97 and 5.4 with bosch platnim +4 plugs accel coil packs k&n intake custom exhaust and hypertech tuner, also have stainless headers on their way... i just put a stock pack back on when the one accel pack blew... it'd run fine and then randomly miss and set a code for misfire cyl 7 detected and after swappins packs with 6 and plugs with 1 the problem moved to 6 and i put different pack on and it was good.... i use my tuner to read the codes

I started to have the high load miss around 90,000 miles after changing plugs 10,000 miles earlier and started thinking about this back then. I looked around for a while and settled on a product from Performance Distributors a sponsor here on FTE. They have a COP called SOS Coils. I bought a set when they first came on as a sponsor and got a little bit of a break on the price. Long story short, I put them in and the high load miss was gone and the truck was back running like new. I have only about 10, 000 more miles since then and only time will tell if the continue to perform like they are right now.

My neighbor has a 2003 Lincoln 4.6 and recently replaced with the MSD. He says it runs better than ever.

AFTERMARKET vs OEM COP Setup

2002 5.4l in need of COP's. I've gone through the discussions dating back to 2010 and still have no resolution. There seem to be many DG508 COPS available on Amazon and EBay. Those on EBay go to great lengths to disguise themselves as OEM and that makes me leery about them if they feel a need to deceive. Average price, not including the poorly rated Accel and MSD, is about $8 each, while true Motorcrafts cost about $55 each. phil6608 said he uses those manufactured by the same company that makes the Motorcraft labeled COP's. So, who is that?
In short, I don't doubt that the Motorcraft brand is superior, just wondering if there is a dependable product without that price tag. All suggestions appreciated.

I've now got 140,000 miles on my truck and it runs like new, check engine light is not illuminated. The SOS cops from Performance Distributors are reliable and as good as OEM Motorcraft cops are. At $37.36 each or $299 for a set of 8 these are a better deal that the factory original parts and can be counted on as they are made here in the USA. The cheap ones on e-bay are out of China. Your decision but I know where I will go again when the time comes.

Thanks John, gonna take your recommendation. Can get Motorcraft through Amazon for about $88 more for the set then SOS is asking. Visited SOS's sight and liked what they had to say. Of course, that is taking into account they are saying this about themselves. I appreciate the input.
