Front and rear oil Change..?s

Whats up guys i bought this truck about a month ago and i love it it has 131xxx miles on it and i want to change the oil in both the front and rear. But im not sure what kind of oil to get... My truck is a 2002 F250 5.4. Im getting ready for the plow season and i figured it makes sense to do it now while its still nice out and not cold.

Thanks

The rear (Sterling 10.50) is 75W/140 gear oil and IIRC the front (Dana 60) is 75W/90 gear oil. I used Mobil 1 synthetic gear oil for both. The rear takes just over a gallon and the front a little less.

Front: 80w-90 (Dana 60) [ 2.7L / 5.8 pints ]
Rear: 75w-140 Synthetic (10.5" axle) [ 3.3L / 6.9 pints ]

Add 8oz of Additive Friction Modifier XL-3 to the rear if you are going to use oil without it.

Also, do not forget the friction modifier if you have LS and do not use a synthetic oil that doesn't require the friction modifier.

I'm going to be doing this soon too.

I found some great write-ups at 2004 F250

Thank you for the info. I assume you mean Wal-Mart.I will look into the Shell Rotella 5w40. I asked my transmission guy for his option and he said Amsoil is great for front and rear differentials. He said Mobil one is probably the best. For the transmission, use the recommended transmission fluid with a the Lucas transmission additive. I know a repairman that travels all over the US and has a million miles on his Ford truck. He swears by the Lucas. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>

I went with Redline from Summit. Not the cheapest stuff, but I'm paying for quality.

Went all over the place today looking for Amsoil. Couldn't find 16qts anywhere in the Portland OR or Vancouver WA area. or a filter... Dealers are a joke... I hate network marketing crap! Bought a Wix filter. It came with the cap. Was told there was an issue with the factory caps leaking... There is oil all over the top of my engine and that is the only place it could be comming from. Anybody had this issue???
The manual says to use 5w-20w, does that sound right? The guy suggested 5w-40w at walmart. That is the stuff made by Shell. What weigh works best???

Take that WIX back for a refund ASAP. You want to cheap out on a filter and kill the life of your motor or spend a few extra bucks for the right part and extend the life of your motor?

The caps are fine if they are not damaged. There is no "issue" with them leaking. Get a Motorcraft, Racor or a Fram filter. You can order them online for cheaper. They are all the same exact to spec filter. The Wix is not to spec and does not properly filter the oil.

I use 5w-40 full synthetic Valvoline Premium Blue Extreme. It's a little pricey, but does the job quite nice. I get it at NAPA. I think dino oil should be 15w-40.

I used the recommended weights in the manual for the front and rear diffs. For oil I used Amsoil Severe Gear and added NO friction modifier. Just dumping in friction modifier makes the already poor performing stock LSD almost completely worthless. Only add FM IF you get chatter. I'd pick up some Permatex "Right Stuff" to seal the covers back up, works great no leaks.

I don't know why the Wix issue. That is all I have been using because of its quality. It cost $28.00, significantly more than the brands you mentioned. Even the Amsoil guy said it was second best to their filter in size of partials it filters out... I would have bought all the stuff from Amsoil if I could have found it...
