Found NOS Big Truck Traction Tires - Date Code Question
#16
It is definitely a puzzle. You've got me curious. Since they are a quality known brand of tire, not some strange generic one, perhaps you could check with your local Cooper dealer and see if they can shed on light on the puzzle pieces? Either way, I'm sure they're safe enough to use for your purposes.

I'd ask Cooper:
Tires - Automotive Tires - Cooper Tires
Is there any chance these are recapped/retreaded? Even if they were, they should have an "R" but you never know...

Boy, that's great info Ross. Thanks. It's hard to imagine there are that many tire manufacturers in the world. I've looked pretty close at these to see if there are any markings on the opposite side, but didn't see any. I'll look again in the morning. BTW, nice touch on the lights.
Josh - Are you saying there's a 1964 date on the Budd (not Dayton) wheels or did you find a date on the old tires? If you found a date on your tires, why can't I find one on mine? Stu

Stu, I don't know why, I don't ever remember seeing dates on tires before, until these.
here's a picture

Wayne - That's one of the first sites I looked at and, significantly I think, the picture shows that a plate with the date information was screwed to the mold at time of manufacturer. That's the same appearance as the information on mine that I posted above, except mine used flat blade screws instead of phillips head.
I did, however, take a second look with the shop light and found some other info. But I'm not convinced these are the dates either. Molded into the sidewall, very near the bead, and very neatly/graphically presented are the following:
17s:
6305 FO H-504
6305 FO H-506
6305 FO H-506
6305 FO H-506
19.5s:
6305 FO H-507
6305 FO H-507
If these were the production dates, they'd all have been made in the 50th weeks of '94, '96, and '97. What are the odds of all of them all being made in the 50th weeks of three different years. Unlikely I think, and again the numbers would not have been easily changed from week to week. These were clearly engraved into the molds. It's a puzzle. Stu

Josh - That's amazing. And that's in the mold itself, not in the screw on tag. I'm at a loss to explain it.
Owen - These Coopers are as close as I think you'll find to the old Coops. I've got two genuine Coops out in the shop that you can have. Authentic North Dakota tires. But I don't think you'd be happy with the shape they're in. Stu

Those look great Josh. Mounted, but never used. Similar to the deal I found. I've not studied the 20s, but I'd bet you won't find traction tread like that anymore either. How many did you find?
As for my tires, I emailed Cooper and asked them if they could research the codes to give me manufacture dates. I got no reply. Stu

Unfortunatly only two, but I couldn't pass them by. Lol.
That's too bad nobody at Cooper replied to your request. I would think that they could fairly easily find any info you needed on them! Its not like they are 50 yrs old.
I wonder if you could make contact with a long time employee that could help?

The engineering company I work for still has a lot of records back into the fifties, even after ownership changed in early 90's.
Its not complete and every year more of it finds the dumpster, most civil projects like roads and water systems from the 50's to 80's have been updated or replaced so the records are pointless to some degree.

That's why I've got the B.F.R.T. Red '97 F-250HD XLT, 460, ZF 5 speed, posi 4.10, 4x4. Spec'd and ordered it new. I don't play off road, but it gets plenty of work pulling idiot kids out of my ditch, hauling, pulling the trailer, etc. Those Cooper Coursers will probably have the molding nubs on them a long long time.
