In the military we always called the big filler nozzle for the gas cans a Donkey Di@%

In the 4x4 crowd, big tires are called "Meats" or "Big Meats"

Small blocks and big blocks are definitely defined by archetecture rather than displacement. The 1969 Ford Muscle Parts catalog mentions the terms when talking about the Windsor and FE engine families. (Printed pre-Cleveland) The Cleveland engines (including 351M/400) are an offshoot of the Windsor, with the same bore spacing and (somewhat, with a little machine work and parts swapping involved) interchangable heads and crankshafts, so those also fall into the small block catagory. The small block engines can be bored and stroked to well over 400 cubic inches, but doing so doesn't change their physical characteristics. Ford Motorsport catalogs from the 1980's also refer to the Windsor and Cleveland engines as small blocks, where the FE and 429/460's are called big blocks.

Interestingly, the 292/312 Y-block share the same bore spacing as the Windsor/Cleveland small blocks.

If the question was rhetorical, I apologize, but I hope this puts the issue to rest, once and for all.

Do you have any of the previous HiPo parts catalogs?

1969 was the first year for Motorsport. Hot Rod Magazine then published a similar soft cover "How To" inre to FE engines.

It was a FIASCO with casting numbers transposed as part numbers and vice versa. ID engineering numbers were transposed as casting and part numbers. Some part numbers were wrong due to typo'd mistakes.

Hot Rod got the info from two partsguys at Beverly Hills Ford...who insisted...UP FRONT...that they proof read the copy before it was published, but...

Hot Rod just went on ahead and published the info without it being proof read...and these mistakes have been copied over and over again by others ever since.

The former Hot Rod writer responsible for this FIASCO is now working at Edelbrock. I wonder how much of their info is correct?

Somewhere in my archives I have a reprint of an old HiPer parts catalog I think from '66. And I had an Off-Highway parts catalog until someone "borrowed" it. I wish I had more. I really get into old racing history, especially Ford stuff.

Recently I found in an antique shop a Rod and Custom magazine from January 1970 with an article telling how to put the "new" Boss 302 heads on the "351 raised deck Ford engine". The work was done by Valley Head Service in Tarzana, along with several local racers of the day they mentioned. Pretty fascinating how they engineered and milled spacer plates for the Boss intake to fit the wider intake space, and a custom modified distributor to fit, as well. It was quite the procedure that resulted in a bunch of intricate labor. And to think only a few months later, the Cleveland engine would have been introduced and created all this work useless. ;-)

The Hod Rod story incident isn't surprising. Sad, but not surprising.

After I moved here it took a while when people said "That's a nice outfit!" when I was in my usual grubby jeans and T-shirt to realise what they were talking about!

You're KILLING me here, Dick! LOL
You'se got your small blocks, and you'se got your big blocks. It's just that some are bigger than others. Besides, size doesn't matter.

The UK has some odd names for things; that's for sure! Actually, it wasn't until I was working with a tech from the UK and he mentioned condensors that I realized that the condensor in a car is just a capacitor. Silly Brits!
