2.3L overhaul difficulty
There is a 1992 Ranger on an auction coming up. It is a pretty nice looking Ranger but they say the engine is using lots of oil. How difficult is it to overhaul the 2.3L engine in these? Any ideas as to a price range for the parts? Was thinking of getting it as a project for my teenage son to work on at home or maybe in the ag shop at high school.

You could find a low mileage replacement for 400 or so. Thats what I did with my 92 2.3. I paid 520 with shipping, but a few months later I found a whole engine and trans for 200.00 so might try that too. Also Car-parts.com Its a bunch of junkyards piled together, lots of engines. I have lots of experiance with the 92 2.3 and they are worth it. Motors are usally good for over 200,000 with out too much cylinder wear. If it wasn't for the number one cylinder, you could probubly do 400,000 on just replacing gaskets and rings and rehoning. I'll check back to see if you have anymore questions.
