Had a similar problem with my '97 F-350 7.3L I noticed that my waste gate was always in the open position so i disconnected the solenoid from the gate and put a spring on the gate up to the lifting lug for the motor. It fixed my problem and now the 'ol girl has tons of power.

You don't have a wastegate.

Yes I do. So ford calls it a back pressure valve... fixed the problem either way

Ford calls it that because that's what it is. It doesn't divert the exhaust past the turbo, which is what a wastegate does.

Following this thread

Action - can you elaborate on the oil bypass valve a bit? What would be the symptoms of a problem with this valve, and what's the fix? I have a power-loss proble tha I think I've pinpointed as a trans problem, but I'm always on the lookout for other causes.

I assume a problem with the low pressure oil system would lead to starving the HPOP of oil but I'd guess the truck would just stall/not start in this case - and the HPOP reservior would be found empty.

Is there something more to a bad bypass valve than this?
