1989 ford f150 rear differential rebuild ?s
Hello all i have a 1989 ford f150 xlt lariat it has a 5.0 and a 5 speed and is 4 wheel drive. Any way im looking into rebuilding the rear end of the truck the pinion shaft has a lot of play in it up and down and both outer axle bearings seem to have lots of play in them. I believe it is a 8.8 inch in the rear. Just wondering if there hard to rebuild or what it all intails i have never taken one apart before and want to know what im getting into. I have access to a press and a pinion and carrier bearing puller. the axle bearings i have done tons of them but never had to pull out the carrier. wondering how to set turning torque and backlash etc... and torque specs for everything. Thanks in advance for anyhelp!!!

FORD 10.50, FORD 7.5, FORD 8, FORD 8.8, FORD 9, FORD 9.75, FORD AOD SLIP YOKE, FORD DISC BRAKE KIT This may help to identify your axle.

Assuming everything is original, if you have a cover on the back of the housing, then you have an 8.8 and the ring gear will come out with the carrier from the rear.
If you have a "third member" at the front of the housing, then you have an 9" and the entire third member along with the carrier, ring gear, etc will come out the front as one unit.
The 9" is easier to work on because you can "set it up" on the bench and then reinstall. The 8.8 must be done in the axle housing.

Here is a link for you to peruse:

But I am very concerned that if you can't even identify the axle you have under your truck....that you would be able to "correctly" rebuild it. It is not a job for a novice (not making assumptions).
If you don't have the tools to check the backlash, bearing preload and don't know how to "set up" the gears to obtain a good pattern....then you'd do better to just determine the gear ratio, go down to the auto salvage... and purchase a (good) axle.
You would have a simple bolt in solution that way and probably save money in the process.
